rMBP - Yosemite...more like Yose-mite-not-work

One of the deciding factors of purchasing the 2014 rMBP was the much anticipated Yosemite update which will allow SMS and Phone call answering and creation right from your machine. After much pain and frustration at the hands of this weighty bit of kit atleast I had these upcoming features to look forward to.
Now I have just discovered that this SMS/Phonecall 'handoff' feature is only available using iOS 8...guess what iOS 8 is only available on iPhone 4S upwards...I have an iPhone 4.

Well, you're really a **** for not having watched the keynote of iOS 8. You should've known at that time that the iPhone 4 doesn't support iOS 8.

If you expect old iPhones to run the latest and greatest OS, you can forget it. Suck it up and save up for a new one. Or better still, considering your recent posts, you might as well as jump ship to Android.

This place is called MacRumors for a reason.

Apple's under no obligation to offer future features on any device. The fact they generally do for at least three years is fantastic and not the norm. I can only name a handful of companies that offer regular feature upgrades when new firmware is announced, even then when the hardware's too old it's just too old.

When you bought your iPhone 4 it wasn't because of a yet unheard of function.

If you want few or fragmented OS updates then look at Android.

First of all, the information regarding support of Continuity and Handoff is openly available. Second, iPhone4 is 4 years now, which translates to few centuries in the smartphone tech. Don't blame Apple for your own incompetence.

$800 phones that are essentially killed off a few years down the line yet people are fighting for the brand. I don't know why so many just roll over and accept this is the case.
TV's aren't disposible, microwaves aren't, fridges aren't, Computers aren't (apart from rMBP's with soldered parts)..yet we are happy to accept that a bit of kit that costs more than alot of other electronics is just a throw away item. Oh no my phone is 3-4 years old, guess I should ship it off to a farm where it can die of old age in a happy environment.

It's a hardware issue as the iPhone 4 doesn't have Bluetooth LE so the feature couldn't be incorporated for your phone.

There is no reason for something like that to have to use bluetooth le.

I did not research online, I wanted a new laptop and the smooth talking, pretty young student 'genius' in the Apple store flogged the lumpy rMBP to me with all these flashy promises of Yosemite intigration with my phone.

Missold a bit of kit in store just so Apple can line their pockets. Not everyone digs down into the darkest depths of the internet to reasearch, I took the word of the genius and the thought that Apple would have some sense not to essentially kill off millions of devices.

You weren't missold. As noted by others, Apple made it clear at their WWDC in June that iOS 8 would be supported by the iPhone 4s and later.

If you're so dissatisfied with the rMBP, return it and go to the Microsoft Store.

Considering it's a device from 2010, should you really expect the damn thing to be running the latest version of the OS in 2014?

To give some scale, here's a number of devices that came out the same time as the iPhone 4 (give or take a few months):
- Samsung Galaxy S (the original that looked just like an iPhone 3GS)
- HTC Desire (the original, not the dozen follow up with extra letters added after "Desire")
- Nokia N8 (yes, that Symbian phone that was supposed to beat the iPhone)
- Motorola Droid 2 (remember those Motorola Android phones with the sliding keyboard?)

Mind you, I don't even own an iPhone, but I still understand that the OS would go nowhere if they limited themselves to what hardware from 4 years ago could comfortably run. In laptop and desktop computers it might "fly" considering how far those devices have gone, but not in mobile devices as those are developing a mile a minute.

Do you think any of those other phones I mentioned are running the latest version the the OS the manufacturer is currently shipping?

For someone whose signature states they have 98k in savings at a 6 figure car, you do wine a lot about a 3k laptop and a 1k phone. You can always sell your laptop and use the profits to fund a different laptop and a new cell phone. Your iPhone 4 isn't worthless either, dump it for 200 bucks and use that money to get a new phone.

honestly i don't think you'll have much better luck w/ android, they do a pretty terrible job at keeping phones updated especially with all the third party UIs… i got a galaxy nexus, which is the bloatware free google stamped line of android phones w/ the BEST support, and support for it stopped w/ 4.3 jelly bean and no longer receives updates… meanwhile the 4s released the same year just got iOS 8 so…..

We are tired of your ****. No one with half a brain should expect a FOUR YEAR OLD PHONE to still be supported. You cannot compare an iPhone to a tv or a toaster, it is a computer. After 4 plus years, computers are no longer supported or able to run new software. It always has, and always will be that way.

Technology advances, so do the components within devices that handle that technology. The iPhone 4 is a dinosaur at this point. Get a new phone.

As I have stated before, Apple supports their devices including iPhones for far longer than any Android manufacturer does. Check them out, you will be back.

Could Apple have made it work with bluetooth 2.1 that's in their 2011 macbooks? Yes but they chose not to because they are greedy.
They could litterally flip a switch and make the 2011 macbooks work with this.

Power usage is the issue and it relates mainly to the phones and iPads but would also be a consideration for laptops. Sure they could make it work but kill battery life on those devices using it.

They could at least make it an option, seeing as how Bluetooth 4 is compatible with earlier bluetooth and the speed spec for 2.1 is enough for all this (3mbit).
The only thing stopping support is apples artificial ****.

It isn't speed, it is about battery life. Apple isn't going to make something work badly if it can avoid it. Like all new features, if you want them, you need to pony up the cash.

I'm waiting for a new laptop with thunderbolt 3 and the new usb spec along with Sandy Bridge. If I was impatient and bought now, it would be my fault, not Apple's or anyone else's.

Mr DP: What data plan are you on with the iP4? Reason I ask is that you wouldn't be the first genius still on their 2 yr contracts who continue to make the monthly iP4 payments (which are built into the contract). If you are one of those, then you've paid for two iP4's Did you get your second one yet?
