Here is my predicament. There are a ton of good games coming out at the end of this year. Since it's E3, we get a taste of stuff for the fall. With Halo 3, GTA IV, Mario Sunshine, Smash Bros, COD 4, etc... I am going to be broke before the end of the year.

I was thinking about getting Guitar Hero III, but Rock band seems to be better with more expandability and a sound track which I prefer to Guitar Hero. My questions is this, what are your thoughts?

GH3 can be played with 1 type of controller.

RockBand can be played with 3.

Id go with GH3 if I live alone or with only 1 person.

Id go with RockBand if I had 3+ roomates, siblings, or lived in like a frat or something. The cost of the extra controllers to get all you can out of the game, would be a daunting undertaking.

At least with the $40 GH controller, you can currently play 2 full games with it. Soon to be 3.

I think all gamers are in the same boat. Too many games, too little money. :)

I have my own predicament with Guitar Hero III. I have a wireless guitar and regular guitar for Guitar Hero I and II on my PS2, but I'm trying to figure out which platform to buy Guitar Hero III for. I doubt the PS2 one will have online play or downloadable songs, but at least I have two guitars. The Wii one has online play, but I doubt it will have downloadable songs unless Nintendo opens up USB Mass Storage support soon. And the 360 will probably have everything, so I'm leaning on that right now. I hope they don't do exclusive songs for each console. That would just annoy me.

Rock Band is sounding like one pretty big experience, especially if you have friends to play with. Guitars, drums, and vocals. They expect to have 100 downloadable songs in a year, and they just announced full downloadable albums. However, they haven't mentioned pricing. I really hope they're cheap.

Anyways, if you have Guitar Hero II on the 360 already, you at least have a guitar. If you feel like playing the skins or wailing on the mic, maybe you should try out Rock Band, especially with all of that promised expansion? Of course, you could get Rock Band with a guitar and pick up just GHIII later.

Some notes about Rock Band (which would be my choice):

- There is a single player career where you can pick any band position to play. For example, you could go through all of single player as the drummer, then again as Lead Guitarist, etc. (So you would not have to have the Drum Kit to do that).

- You can use the GH2 guitars

- You can use the Xbox Communicator (headset :p) instead of buying the Mic.

- Harmonix is making Rock Band and they know music, it's yet to be determined how well Neversoft handles the GH franchise.

- Since Harmonix is now owned by MTV, nearly all the music in Rock Band will be done by the original artists, not cover bands like GH.

For people like myself, who have GH2 and two guitars, that means all I'd have to purchase is the drumkit, and I'd be getting something that played completely new.

Your points are well taken, but i think GH3 is going to have more masters than the past versions have, so the bit about original music may be exaggerated slightly.

As it were, i only have a Wii right now and don't plan on getting a PS3 or 360 so right now im stuck since Rock Band hasn't been officially announced for Wii yet (though it was confirmed by Harmonix they eventually plan on bringing it to Wii). I've never had a GH game because i've always had only Nintendo consoles, but whenever Rock Band comes out, hopefully there isn't anything else good out, i play drums in real life and im dying to play a video game version!

(Rock Band)

Rumored prices consist of a complete package including the game, 1 guitar, 1 mic and the drum set for $200. Gamestop also has separate prices for everything (although unconfirmed) consisting of $80 each for drums and guitar, and $30 for mic (although for some reason the Ps3 guitar is listed at $60; people question maybe it's because Microsoft's wireless technology is specialized and may require something extra to use it, whereas the Ps3 uses standard Bluetooth). If you want the whole package, $200 is a good deal considering alone the 3 instruments (bought separately) would run you $190 on the 360 and that doesn't include the game.

IMO -
Rock Band sounds really promising. Harmonix was behind GH1&2, they have been making music games for years now. (Frequency and Amplitude titles before GH.)

Neversoft has not made any music games up until now...which scares me.

GH3 is a cheaper choice, but I don't think the core gameplay will be nearly as good as Rock Band. Plus, Rock Band has already pledged a lot more support into DLC...new songs every week?!? That's what I'm talking about! :D And Metallica! 'Master of Puppets' + 'One' to go, please. :p

I went from planning on buying GH3 and avoiding Rock Band (due to the higher entry fee) to avoiding GH3 and planning on buying the $200 RB package the day it comes out. Plus even if you're just by yourself you can always hop online and play with three other people. Not only that, but who doesn't play air drums once in awhile? I can't wait to play the drum kit. ;)

Rock Band: Nirvana's 'Nevermind,' real venues and a possible release date [Update]

Should you find yourself with the September issue of GamePro magazine, you'll be treated to a three page feature on Harmonix's upcoming musical juggernaut, Rock Band. At E3, downloadable albums made a huge impact with legendary rockers The Who and Metallica. Joining this prestigious bunch is Nirvana with their infamous masterwork "Nevermind," which will be made available sometime after release. According to GamePro, we should also expect to see a new, full album to download every week.

With such incredible albums, you'll need a venue in which to rock. Ditching the fictional locales of their previous work, Rock Band features 41 venues, spread across the likes of Amsterdam, Berlin, Boston, Chicago, London, Los Angeles, Moscow, New York, Paris, Seattle, San Francisco, Sydney and Tokyo, just to name a few.

So when exactly will you be teeing off neighbors with your plastic drum set? If you ask GamePro, November 6th, which would place it about a week after Guitar Hero III should you pay attention to GameStop. We've placed an inquiry with Harmonix and we'll let you know what we hear.

[Update - Weekend be damned! Harmonix has gotten back to us regarding the November 6th release date listed in GamePro. As of now, there is no official release date beyond "Holiday 2007." So until Harmonix drops the official deets themselves, its best to take everything lightly.]

Nirvana + Nevermind = sold.

Nevermind is one of my top 5 fave albums of all time, as is Nirvana a top 3 fave bands for me. I was already excited about Rock Band...now I can barely contain my excitement. Best news I could've hoped for - and I'm sure there's plenty more good news to come. :)

I'll be living with 3 roommates this fall so Rock Band could work out very nicely. Plus Nirvana . . . I'm nearly sold. (Though I've never played any GH games.)

Well I'm really interested in RB....I've never played a GH game so I might have to purchase everything but I do have a mic(PS3/360)

Will RB be online enabled?

One more note and I know the name is ROCK band but is there other genre in the game? old school hiphop/RnB/Gospel/Soul/Reggae/Soca?

Bless

Rock Band is the one with the bass/guitar and drums??? if so i am definately going to buy it!!!! wat consoles will RB be on?? just ps3/360?? i dont have one of these :(

I'm going with Rock Band because Harmonix has many of the patents that made GH1&2 so great, meaning rock band will have that same feel as GH1&2 and i think it will fun to be able to use the drum set:):):)

LoL.

its a well rounded mix of rock and metal. nothing more, nothing less.

maybe downloadable content will fix that, but the games engine is built around rock band characters, instruments and venues.

Will RB be online enabled?

Yes, 360 and Ps3.
You'll be able to go online and join up to 3 other people to play as a complete 'band' which is awesome. In addition to DLC...which (according to the above link) will feature new albums every week. I'm assuming they'll have single tracks and songpacks as well as albums; again though - Nirvana's 'Nevermind' full album on there has me sold already. Hell if they bring Pearl Jam 'Ten' out as well, I think I'll soil my pants for a week. (two best albums of the 90s IMO)

I love GH 1 + 2 but I think Rock Band will be the successor to get, not GH 3. I just don't have any faith in Neversoft to make as great a music game as Harmonix, a company that's been doing music games for a long time now.

that.. is..totally..amazing!!!!! thats incredible, just imagine jamming with some random people on the interwebz! that it totally crazy. this is literally the best idea because even people that cant play instruments (like me) can practice and get better!!

Please don't discard GHIII yet. I have to admit that RB will be awesome but I think that GHIII will also be worthy purchase.

I have a friend that work at neversoft and he was responsible for workin on the title THP8. You can bet GHIII will have the same level of quality. I also think that RB will focuse more on song that you can play as a band while GHIII will focus move on guitar oriented song. GHIII will also features Slash boss battle and online co-op/competive play.

I will definetly be buying RB and GHIII this winter.

Some people at scorehero got to take a trip to Neversoft and play a full version of GHIII. They said it was by far the best game in the GH franchise.

P-Worm

lol I think it's hilarious when i read on the internet about people worried that GH3 will not be as good because it is made by a different dev team.

The guys at neversoft have even stated themselves that their number one goal was to make sure this game plays exactly like the previous ones. "We dont want to be the ones to mess up guitar hero" was the quote from one of the guys working on the project. They have kept basically the same engine and everything, added new songs which are mostly masters, gave the graphics a face lift and added some new features.

They have gone to painstaking lengths to make sure this title plays right and delivers the best guitar hero experience yet.

I and many other journalists and writers agree that this game will not disappoint when it's released.

That being said, I'm defintiely getting RB also. Maybe not right away, the Wii60 is a hungry beast for sure.

So glad I don't own a 360 right now. I can afford to put my fingers in my ears and totally ignore everything coming out on the platform; I'm going to go broke on the Wii alone! Smash Bros Brawl, Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime Hunters, Mario Strikers Charged (which I just bought), NiGHTS, Mario & Sonic, BWii...

I'll totally ignore everything released on 360 while I pick up all the Wii titles, and when I DO get a 360 everything will have gone down in price! Ignorance really is bliss sometimes (as it can save you from spending all your money! :D ).

I'll probably be getting Guitar Hero 3. The choice is made easier for me by the fact that I don't actually have a 360, but if I did, I'd probably get GH3 simply because Rock Band sounds like it will be expensive.

Between the two, Rock Band will probably be the better one, but will probably also be significantly more expensive.

I already have all 3 GH games plus 2 wired guitars for the PS2, as well as GH II and 1 guitar for the 360.

I'll probably pick up GH III for the PS2 since I already have guitars, then get the complete Rock Band kit for the 360, using my current guitar as the bass [since it probably won't need the 2nd set of solo-ing buttons on the fretboard]. Here's hoping there is a RB 360 kit with a wireless guitar.

I was thinking. I don't want the Drum kit mainly because i don't know any one who knows how to play drums that would be interest in this game. So i was thinking about 1 or 2 guitairs. It seems to me that using the GH III Guitar would be a good idea cuz getting both and being able to use the guitar on both would be more cost effective for what you get.

Does any one know if you could use the Guitair Hero III works with Rock Band?

From what Harmonix has said, yes, the GH2 360 guitar will work with Rock Band. (as well as GH3 obviously)

You'll be missing the upper fret buttons for solos; I'm not sure how that will affect the game (if at all) though.

I'm gonna have to go with RB until someone makes a freaking music based game that has all genre..

I wonder if sing star has all genre......they could bring out a DJ set and mic for a hiphop based music game.
