Right. So, maybe wait for 11.0.2 or 11.0.3 before diving in (while maybe testing 11.0.1 and/or 11.0.2 on either a VM or a spare Mac to determine whether it's ready for mass rollout).

Personally, I may dive right in. Big Sur was far more stable in public beta for me than Catalina was at any point in its lifetime.

The sad fact is that some macOS releases never 100% stabiiize while some do and while some are pretty stable from early on (I ran El Capitan from 10.11.0 to its final security patch and it was 100% rock solid all throughout; similarly, both Mojave and Mountain Lion were pretty solid for me from start to finish). Your mileage will certainly vary as will the stability of each release (the utterly terrible part of Tim Cook's insisted-upon annual release cycle for macOS). But I'd definitely make sure to play with and test each version on a spare Mac or VM as that will help influence when/if to move to a new macOS version.
I took the leap and for today, so far it's good to go! I need a CPU boost and I have a small one, but all helps:
from SC 997 MC 4661 to SC 1027 MC 4777, but I'll wait for my MacBook Air circa 2014. It still works fine as is and I want to make sure it remains that way.

I'd imagine a 2014 MacBook Air will be okay on Big Sur, so long as you have 8GB of RAM and not 4GB. So, far, it's seeming like Late 2013 and Mid 2014 13" MacBook Pros are the ones having the most issues with installing the update. That said, I'm running it on a 2017 12" Retina MacBook and it's smooth on that machine (though, it's not like I'm doing too much on that machine).

I think as long as you follow their recommendations on devices and years, it’s fine. I ended up updating sooner on my MacBook Air since everything worked well on the other system. I had to free up 25 GB just to install and afterwards had quite a bit of space. Running smooth on both systems.

Well, I happened to wake up at 4 a.m. (GMT +1) and figured I'd give it a try and yes, it installed in about 20 -30 min. One of the fastest installs from start to finish ever! And this morning when I woke up to a fresh new macOS that boosted my Geekbench I am a happy camper! I have one little recovered file in the trash that seems uniportant related to rapportd (a metadata file), so I'll keep it there and delete in a week if I see no need fo it.
I downloaded Big Sur in 20 minutes also and it was just ugly
2019 mac air ran slowly and would not print any longer
got the “ error message that I had unsupported software from my Hp drivers

I then made a second mistake and started a chat session with Mac support

they were very polite and. Asked me 5 or 6 questions and 2 different agents then disconnected me

So with a reboot and holding down shift alt command and r

after 20 minutes I’m back a Mohave and everything works swell

I just had to redownload office 365

I think Apple is lost on this download and it will take a few months for Trump to fix Big Sur

I don't know if you gave up, but the issue was just the surge that day and the poor planning for it. Later early morning everything worked like a charm and I've been on Big Sur forever since on my iMAC and a week later(almost a week), I updated my 2014 MacBook Air that also is humming along well. Sad though to hear your dilemma.
