Like many of you counting down the release of the iPhone, I have been trying to determine the best way to secure me one on release. I was thinking though...if there is indeed a 'shortage' of iPhones....why would they bother staying open to midnight? Like the PS3 and Wii, they were sold out in minutes...definitely not 6 hours.

Thoughts?

because it gets people who wanted to see the iPhone into the store so they can upsell something else if they don't have any.

because everyone will be signing up for plans, its just not like an ipod where you can ring it up in one swipe, takes time

Exactly....which is my point. If they're opening until midnight...chances are they have enough iPhones to last throughout.

It's rumoured there's over 3 million iPhones stockpiled. That's WAY more then enough considering it's such an expensive gadget.

The rumor of there being 3 million on hand is, without a doubt, the most ludicrous rumor out there. Think about it, how the hell could 3 million have been made since FCC approval was granted? If FCC approval came 60 days ago (and it was later I believe), that means 50,000 would have to be made each day.

The _only_ way it could happen is if that 2nd company that was contracted to assembly the iPhones was also contracted to assembly the first run ones. iirc, the 2nd company was contracted to assembly a different looking unit for different markets and they have to deliver x million by September.

Even then, I have a hard time believing it.

I agree 3M is a little absurd, but I doubt they waited until FCC Approval to begin the manufacturing process.

That's a good point. Whatever amount they will have in stock June 29, it seems odd to think they would have waited for FCC approval. I mean, it is the greatest phone of all, how could it not receive FCC approval?

if you made millions of phones, only to be turned down by the fcc, you would have to remake all the phones with whatever modifications they require to make it fall within guiadelines. then you would be out millions of phones + labour

Look FCC approval isn't some unknown gauntlet where you submit your device, cross your fingers, and hope for the best. What is needed for approval is well known in advance (and largely has to do with interference and frequencies).

Any major company knows with quite certainty whether or not their device is going to receive FCC approval. Its not some roll of the dice.

Furthermore, manufacturing has many steps, and quite a few of those steps (including having all parts arrive at factory, first stages of assembly) could be done before approval, and then the rest finished after approval.

When SJ announced the iPhone he could say with relative certainty that the iPhone would be available in June because FCC approval was going to happen, but the exact time or day (remember, this is a government office) of approval couldn't be known.

consider waiting for revision 1 to buy iphone.

You know, I hear this a lot. But I trust Apple enough to deliver a quality product. If they don't, oh well, I can think of far worst ways to spend money. (*cough* alcohol :) )

I say, buy it. Don't like it? You have 30 days to return it.

alcohol has a medicinal quality; it kills germs. :p
lets hope the first batch doesnt have some major problem. im just surprised so many people are willing to flop over $500 for something theyve never held, or seen in person.

Maybe Apple risked it, and started making them anyway. Risky no doubt, but clearly they had some type of working unit as early as Jan..possiblly sooner.

But if they have to set up a plan for each iPhone, similar to current plans, that took me a little under an hour. Most likely the store will have more people work, and be able to streamline the work, but still 1/2 hour is likely. Thats only 12 iPhones per store.

I was just listening to the TWIT podcast and they mentioned Apple having 3 million at launch. Those guys are pretty respected in the blogsphere...I hope they're right!
