Look, BusinessWeek pulled the 3 million figure out of thin air. Apple doesn't leak that kind of info, ever. My guess is that a few editors over there had recently bought some Apple stock given the recent run-up, and they were looking for a way to inflate it even more. So, they came up with this 3 million number, which certainly sounds impressive and has not only contributed to the hype, but become an oft-believed rumor on the internet. Mission accomplished.

I would love for the 3 million unit to be true, but I severely doubt it. Even if it is, one would expect lots of hardware defects with production going so quick and rushed. I'm more inclined to believe the 40-phones-per-store rumor.

I doubt they would spend all this marketing dollar leading up to the launch and then not have enough units on hand.

marketing dollar? 5 commercials and a poster...ooh soooo much marketing ;)

As someone who works in advertising and more specifically media, trust me they are spending quite a bit.

I would divulge dollars but just know that it is in fact ALOT more than you are erroneously assuming.

For that "Hello" spot alone that aired 3 weeks, they spend more than most reasonably recognizable brands spend all year.

Didn't stop Sony from having commercials on every channel for the PS3 ... didn't stop Nintendo from having commercials on every channel, etc. Not having enough units at launch time is expected and part of the media buzz.

PS3 ran into production problems which were resolved in a relative short amount of time. Nintendo's Wii succeeded beyond their wildest imaginations and market projections. Given all the research Apple and at&t has put in the past 6 months, and I haven't heard of any production hicups, I don't think supply will be an issue.

What phone is an 'upsell' from the iPhone?

If you go into the store wanting to see the iPhone but not sure about buying anything, then selling you any phone would be an upsell. So they want to get you into their stores and sell you something, whether they have an iPhone to sell you or not.

And there are plenty of more powerful devices than this out there.

alcohol has a medicinal quality; it kills germs. :p
lets hope the first batch doesnt have some major problem. im just surprised so many people are willing to flop over $500 for something theyve never held, or seen in person.

I agree. It's crazy to spend $500 on the iPhone. You have to seriously be nuts.

Every knows you should get the $600 version! :)
