On the heels of the unveiling of HTC’s new Droid DNA, a 5-inch smartphone with a full HD 1080p display, the tech world is buzzed with rumors indicating that Samsung is also rolling up its sleeves to enter the 5-inch screen bandwagon.

The rumor has it that the South Korean tech giant is preparing a 4.99-inch Full HD Super AMOLED screen to be showcased at the annual Consumer Electronics Convention (CES) in January 2013, a display that is likely to be featured in the company’s upcoming flagship smartphone iteration, presumably called the Samsung Galaxy S4.
SamMobile reported Friday, citing Korean website Asiae, that “engineers over at Samsung display have outdone themselves this time” and have “managed to make a 4.99″ Full HD display with a stunning PPI of 441.”

Further, ongoing rumors have also claimed that Galaxy S4 will be offered in 16GB, 32 GB, 64GB and even 128 GB variant and will also come packed with 3GB RAM, 3,200 mAh battery, and a Skype-ready 1.9 megapixel front-facing camera.

From 4.8" to 5"? Just a stretched S3. ;). Geez Samsung is slipping. Don't they know everyone wants 6" phones now? :p

If they really do that they are going to do 2 bad things for their business. First, they are going to lose all the people who already think the S3 was a bit too big by making it even larger. Second, they are going to take sales away from the Note 2 since the difference in .5 inches isnt much at all and the S4 would have a much better display and hardware. Stupid move if you ask me.

Good thing nobody is asking you, especially Samsung. Otherwise we know nothing outside the iPhone would exist.
@OP, this is why I have said Apple will fall even further behind. Apple is too greedy to give customers what they want in their next device. They love small itty bitty spec bumps to squeeze every last cent out of you. But now that the industry has gone full steam ahead, Apple have to step up past the small spec bumps or continue its fall from the top. The Galaxy S3 outsold the iPhone 4S for a reason. When the GS3 came out, the current iPhone was the 4S. And in the past, the current iPhone at the time of the release of any other phone has never been outsold. Until now. That is a significant event. People are expecting more these days.

"give customers what they want?" How many iphone users are crying for a 5 inch phone? VERY few. Go look at the polls in the iPhone forum, no one really wants a bigger phone than 4 inches. So you expect Apple to change their formula which has made them BILLIONS of dollars and seen them produce the most popular phone in the world to appeal to the what? 10% of people who want bigger iPhone? LOL I really hope you arent in business.

the phone will not be any bigger. They will simply shrink the bezel. So will still be the same form factor just a bigger screen with more pixels.

No source. Just personal opinion. They have a gap in the 5" area, since the original Note has been replaced by the 5.5" Note II, but they won't want a larger form factor to take away sales from the Note II. So, expect edge to edge screen.

Maybe true, but I think Samsung is trying to move away from CES for big reveals and moving more towards the Apple model. Either way, I think there's definitely a 5-incher in the pipeline.

Sure, look at what happened with the S3 and Note 1.

I think there's a market for a 5" iPhone.

It's likely not as large as the 4" phone market but it wasn't less than a year ago that people on here were arguing against a smaller iPad.

We've seen how that has played out.

I do agree though a larger Galaxy confuses the market for the Note.

Wonder how the 4" S3 mini is selling? Doubt all that well. Ultimately Samsung will be the masters of their own demise. Every iteration of the Galaxy S range has to have a bigger screen to be considered an upgrade over the out going model. When and where does it end? We only 2" away from 7" mini tablet territory.

Isn't the S4 rumored to be 4.99? Maybe that's the max.

It would make sense to me to keep the S line sub 5" and have the Note line be above 5".

Apple was making millions (billions?) off the iPad. They still introduced the iPad Mini.

Is it that hard to believe that if Apple ever releases a 5" phone, that people would warm to it?

I don't think it'll happen, but if it did, I don't get why that's so hard to fathom.

at what point are we going to stop calling them phones?

We'll get to 7" (where they overlap with tablets), and then manufacturers will start coming out with "slim, small, sexy phones" in the 4-4.5" range. Everyone will buy them, and claim superiority over those "silly people" who bought miniature televisions for smartphones.

...And the cycle repeats. :p

As an apple fan I hate to say this, but most apple fans don't want bigger than a 4 inch screen because Apple hasn't made one yet (for a phone).

Most people on this forum were saying that 3.5 was plenty and they would never ever need more than that, and then the iPhone 5 came along and everyone changed their stance. If Apple put out a 4.5 or a 5 inch screen they would absolutely sell like hot cakes, and it would definitely get me to buy a new iPhone. I think there is a chance that Apple may indeed begin to release a larger phone, or even multiple versions of new phones at the same time. The whole screen size fragmentation argument is moot at this point. iOS is running on 4 different screen sizes as we speak. What's one or two more sizes?

After using a Lumia 920 for a few days I am infatuated with the screen and the hardware in general. Yes it has areas it's lacking in and I won't compare it to iOS, but now I know what I am looking for as far as screens go. I think a S4 with a 5 inch screen would be great and I don't see it eating in to the note 2 all that much. They are very different devices, despite their similarities.

Ya, I think it wouldn't affect note sales. There is more to the note than just a slightly larger screen, and that is what people keep forgetting.

If the S4 will be a 5" screen. I have no doubt Samsung will make the Note 3 at least 5.7" with even better specs. If screen size is an issue, don't buy it and quit complaining. No ones forcing you to.

Samsung makes what? At least 20 different phones. They can afford to take a bolder stance Apple can't because they only make ONE iPhone. If Samsung releases a phone that doesn't go over well, big deal. They just put out another one a few months later and abandon the previous one as they have done plenty of times. Who cares about the beta testers that buy it right?

I would think that Apple would do enough polling or whatever to determine if sales would justify making a 4.5" or 5" screen. If enough profit can be made, why not make a larger screen? I think that as long as the larger screened phones continue to sell well, companies will put these out because enough consumers do want them.

I hear some posters saying "iPhone users do/don't want...". However, there are so many more iPhone users out there than the vast majority of us will come into contact with that it's hard to say what the majority of iPhone users want. My wife who is small/petite and has small hands has used everything from a 2.8"-4.5" device and the 4.5" device is her favorite.

Samsung has done well with their 4.6"-5.5"+ screens despite the naysayers and those concerned enough with what people are using to make fun of them for what they look like holding a large device to the side of their face. I guess there are enough of us (Note users) that just don't care what others think about us.
