Yeah, I have seen the replacement drives, but most of the ones I have seen only go up to the 5th or 6th gen models. I don't know if they changed something preventing replacement hard drives or what. At one time, I intended to replace my 30GB 5.5 gen with a 240GB drive, but I never did. I did replace the battery in it, but just never got around to doing the HD.

I have that hard drive, be thankful you never did. The 240GB is pretty slow, fortunately this update was simply used to display video on my TV so it works great for that but for playing music it lags pretty noticeably.

What I don't understand is- why are both the Classic and shuffle on the Apple website for sale when neither was mentioned (only the shuffle shown) and no updates? It would have been better just to let them both go or give some capacity increases at least, damn.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe the Nano and Shuffle got refreshed colors yet again. They both got 5 similar colors, and the Nano also added red and black.

Other than that, no, the Shuffle didn't change at all from what it was in the last generation. Just colors. In addition, the OS on the new Nano is available for the previous Nano, so you could say that little changed there except for Nike+ built in and colors.

Furthermore, I don't believe that the iPod Touch gained the A5 like the iPhone 4S. It's not that the A4 is bad, but to represent the iPod Touch as a gaming device and not give it the graphic-loving A5 is absurd. It should be on-par with the iPhone, always. Now it's going to technically be a step behind? Strange, but understandable.

I'm really only upset that they didn't even MENTION the Classic. We were OWED at least that, considering it wasn't mentioned last year at all either. It's a slap in the face that they're selling us something they haven't even uttered a word about in 2 and a half years. It should have gotten a capacity bump or a price drop, if not both.

The only thing I'm unhappy about is the Classic, or the lack of the mention of it. The only thing I want Apple to do is put out something regarding the Classic. Anything. I can honestly say this is the first keynote that's left me unhappy.

The lack of Steve didn't help, but that's another story.

The nano has had product red, and that is graphite, not black, just like last year. Nothing changed at all. Whatsoever. It's the SAME EXACT NANO, PEOPLE. It is not "NEW" like they are claiming on their website.

And , no, the shuffle did not change in colors - it is THE SAME COLORS and SAME PRODUCT as last year.

wow. Probably the best post I've read on here in a LONG time.

I have love for the click wheel iPods as well. After Apple removed the click wheel games from iTunes and the numerous rumors of it being discontinued. I bought an iPod classic from an Apple retail store a few days before the keynote; in case it was axed. I hadn't bought a click wheel iPod since 2006 and the feeling of seeing them go, is rather depressing.

I was excited for the keynote, almost hoping to hear something about the Classic a little more than the iPhone. I was happy with it in the end. I'll upgrade to the 4S, as it's an amazing device. Although, this keynote didn't give me the same vibe that I've felt from many others in the past. I'm realizing Apple is going through, in my opinion, a major transition.. and I'll stand with them. good or bad. :apple:

Bah, I realized that I don't really care if they update it, cancel it or whatever. the current iPod classic fits my needs so I just purchased one

This was hands down the most pathetic iPod update in history.

That said, I'm glad the classic is still kicking if even in the identical form/capacity as the 2009 model. That means toward the end of next year, my 160 GB current gen classics that I bought shortly after release in 2009 will be about 3 years old, so I'll just reset the clock and get a couple new ones before they do kill them off for real.

They don't owe us anything. They are in business to make money, and the Classic is selling just fine as it is. Really, the only things they can really do and keep the current form factor is lower the price or increase storage. Given that they did lower the prices on the Nano and one Touch, it is disappointing that they didn't lower the Classic price. I can understand no bump in capacity. There are very few manufacturers who make spinning hard drives in this form factor (1.8") in the first place, and there really isn't that much demand for them. The demand for spinning drives in general is dying, much less for such a specialized drive.

As for the others: Again, with the Shuffle they can't really change up the format. When they did change it, (the stick with no buttons), nobody liked it. While I do wish they would go back to a 5th gen style format for the Nano, I'm not surprised they didn't change it. I suppose it is selling well enough to keep around.

The Touch is what really surprised me. Why the price drop on only the 8GB model? Also, zero improvements on hardware? I expect them to slightly de-tune the Touch with a slightly slower processor, worse camera, etc, but that was crazy. I really wish they had upgraded the camera, as the one in the Touch (and iPad for that matter) is terrible. I guess they figured it was selling well enough that they didn't need any upgrades. Developers must really hate this, as now they need to write for two different platforms. If they try to take advantage of the new processor and GPU in the iPhone, it may not run on the Touch.

Toshiba makes a single-platter, 1.8" 220 or 240 GB (I don't recall the size) drive that would be a direct drop in for the classic. They make it, but Apple would only have a 30% margin and not a 40% margin if they gave us that...

Imagine the future if they kept the classic - a terabyte of flash based storage...even the near future, simply more storage, is enticing.

Why? Some things are fine the way they are. Sometimes you just want to be able to replace what you had because it broke, like a pie plate or a butter dish. When I need to replace a cast iron skillet or a two-cup measure (and I regard both shuffles and Classics as that sort of utility) I drive into town and expect to buy a replacement. Pretty much or exactly like what I broke or that finally wore out from appreciative use.

I don't know what I would do if I went to my hardware store and they told me "Oh we don't stock skillets any more, they were so boring. We have so-and-so's new gourmet cookware though, it's really great, you can go freezer to oven and stick it in your dishwasher and it's all miniaturized for today's modern snack-oriented lifestyle." I would probably want to punch the guy out. Likewise Apple if they decide to try to sell me a touch-screen nano INSTEAD of a shuffle with real buttons on it. Don't get me wrong, I like my orange nano! But I like my shuffles too, and my Classics, and if and when they break, those are what I want to buy again.

There's a reason that supermarkets still carry stuff like Cheerios, and hardware stores still stock cast iron skillets. PEOPLE BUY THEM.

The nanos and the shuffles did not change. Same colours and specs and product codes as before.
