Kernel extensions do represent a significant security risk. They should be difficult to install, I would not want any of my family members to be able to install one.
Exactly, for normies who're looking to purchase a Mac the default options *will* be only allowing the user to downlaod apps off the App Store and not allowing them to easily gain permission to grant third parties powerful choices. But for power users, the option to disable all of those will always be available on the Mac.

I was gonna say, you don't think that all of those have DriverKit based updates by now? OWC seems to be on top of things like that. Unsure about CalDigit. My experience with their Thunderbolt 3 docks prior to any kind of Apple Silicon transition announcement was abysmal, which, of course leads me to blindly assume that applies to the rest of their products.
I’m sure OWC and Caldigit are working on DriverKit versions but I know for sure that Caldigit still requires a kext.

I don’t have a Thunderbolt dock from Caldigit but I do have a USB-C SOHO dock and it works great. Highly recommended.

That's good to hear! I definitely hated the Thunderbolt 3 dock they had. Though, I tend to find that USB-C docking stations are often WAY more reliable than Thunderbolt 3 docking stations (and that there's almost no real need for the latter when the former does the same thing).
