Just got back from the Apple Store after wanting to try on the S10 Watch.

Ive had the S4 (SS) for years now and love it.

It is insane how little of a physical difference there is and Im glad I visited the Apple Store first and tried it on before purchasing the S10.

Considering the S10 doesn't come in Stainless Steel, I'll be keeping my S4 for at least another year or two.

I did want the Sleep Apnea feature but I also wanted to Oxygen Monitoring feature as well, so if I do upgrade sway from the S4 then that'll mean me finding a rare S9.

EDIT: Just to add, the S4 is more than capable and not only gets the job done, but gets the job done well.

Completely agree with you. My series 4 is incredible still. I got the series 10 because it had been many years and I wanted to get all the newer features (typical Apple!)

Agreed. The only reason I’m thinking of upgrading from S4 is because I’m still on iOS 16 with my iPhone 14 pro max.

If I upgrade to iOS 17, I’m afraid I will be pestered with constant update alerts on my S4. And, if I update the S4, that will most likely mess up my battery life.

I’m thinking of trying to look for a brand new S9, then upgrading to iOS 17 on my iPhone.

I may upgrade to an S9SS

SS has spoiled me and can never go back to aluminum. Titanium isn’t for me.

that’s impressive if I were you I’d keep it exactly as you have it now.

iOS 16 was great the previous watchOSes as well.

I upgraded to the Jet Black AW S10 from the S4 AW Nike + edition and absolutely love it.

100% worth the upgrade simply due to the battery life and quick charging capabilities as well as the software updates. The AW S4 is aged out.

Im glad the OP is still happy with their S4 and perhaps has less demands with it than some of us. I wore an S5 for five years and it was a great watch, but the S10 is so much better in general. It’s faster, battery life is great, tracks activities more accurately and the screen is more responsive. Nice to have a slightly bigger screen too with better brightness. There is a lot of difference in use and if some prefer the older watches, I guess that is fine too, but let’s not pretend they are almost the same.

From a 44 mm Series to a 46 mm Series 10 you have a 25% bigger screen. For me, that's not just "slightly bigger". It's a big jump.

No Always On Display would make the Series 4 a nonstarter for me, but I’m glad it’s still working out for you.
That’s the one feature that destroyed the battery on my series 5 after the first year. I turned it off and didn’t use it for the following 4 years. When I upgraded to the Series 10 I disabled it straight away. I’ll be honest I raise my wrist to see the time anyway so it’s a feature that isn’t that necessary for me.

With my series 4, I felt like I was missing out due to not having “always on” and I envied those that did. When I got my Ultra 2, I realised that ”always on” was pointless in my use case (I raise my wrist to look at the watch, or it’s buried under a sleeve anyway) so I turned it off and haven’t bothered with it since.

Because you didn't know any of that stuff before you went to the Apple Store. Good for you, but you already knew all that stuff before you went to try on the watch.

I've never found it to cause a problem with battery life, though I tend to always have a backup watch available when I need to charge anyway. I tend to record at least one GPS/LTE workout a day – often two – so battery drain from AOD is the least of my worries.

I’m with you on the Stainless Steel. I’d rather have an older SS than a new aluminum.

Titanium silver perfectly matches stainless steel, while natural titanium appears slightly darker indoors but nearly identical outdoors. I wouldn't discount it or make decisions with a quick session at the Apple store. Buy and return if you're not happy.

My S4 is now for gym use only, to avoid constantly changing straps on the S10.

Although I enjoy many features of the S10, the best part is not having to think about battery life. Owning two watches is a game changer for anyone with an active lifestyle.

Not worrying about battery life is why I got a black ultra 2 to upgrade my Graphite SS Series 7

I have an S6 SS, had it just under two years. Maximum Battery capacity shows 79%. The S2 I had before it lasted a lot longer. I am tempted by an S10 but I’m not paying £700 again for the premium case. Apple now value my old watch at £75 trade in. 90% depreciation in under three years. Thanks Apple.

The batteries really only last around 2 years before it gets annoying. Another £95 to get a fresh one is not a bad deal for an expensive device still receiving support.

The screen on the aluminium versions scratches super easily. You'll definitely miss the sapphire.

If you purchased the watch from Apple and it's been less than 2 years, it might be worth opening a claim to get it swapped for free. You'll need to quote the relevant consumer protection laws that got ported over from the EU.

You can’t be serious!!! The size and shape of the case. The features of the hardware and software. No longer supported, therefore no updates. I can go on for hours.

What?! How dare someone disagree with me.

Just kidding. My sights are set on a newer watch now but definitely not aluminum or titanium. If the S10 came in stainless I’d order that but will now search for S9 or S8

Agree.

It is the first feature I turn off on Android phones, new iPhones, and any watch that supports it. Raise to wake, a quick tap, or turn of the crown (at least with my series 1 AWU) is simple as can be.

Favorite feature is the quick turn back then forward of the crown to bring the screen up like a dimmer. Super handy when you want to check time or information without a quick flash on of the panel.
