So I've just upgraded to Safari 15. Go to 'customise toolbar' to put my favourite buttons in the top and no matter what I do it will not allow me to put the 'forward/back' buttons there, but will everything else.
Was literally saying to my colleagues as I was installing it 'I wonder what they've broken on this version' and I found out in the first five seconds of using it.
I'm experiencing the same thing with trying unsuccessfully to customise my Safari toolbar. But I was on Monterey when I experienced the problem so I upgraded to Ventura and that hasn't fixed the problem. I spent four exhausting hours on the phone with Apple Support doing things in Safe mode and after that the toolbar items were back. But the following day they were all gone again and have stayed that way. I would settle for losing all the other buttons if only I could have the back/forward button working. I would like to go back to Monterey as I find the hideous Ventura login screen a nightmare but it's a technical challenge to go back and this particular problem showed up in Monterey anyway.

This is very strange but while I was posting in this thread the back/forward button in safari started working again!
No... now the problem is back again!
