Just realized this was an old thread. But, I am on El Capitan and Safari 9 - still slow. And a 1 year old MBP 15

I am having the same issue; I just bought my mbp in August 2015, running Yosemite. This started a week or two ago.

None of the work arounds worked. Would love to use Chrome but it eats up my battery. Firefox is clunky imo but I may be forced to use it. Safari is just so much more user friendly!

Does anyone actually know the cause? vs just a work around?

Disabling the DNS Prefetching will solve the problem.

Execute this command in the terminal

defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
