Safari or Chrome?

If you have a Google account I would say Chrome.

If you are heavily invested in Apple products/iCloud then Safari.

Performance wise I think (to my eye) they are very similar.
 
On Mavericks... Safari 7 is not very good (looks & feel wise). On Yosemite however, Safari gets a more Chrome look to it. All and all, if you want to actually have a battery life to your laptop... go with Safari or Firefox, Chrome majorly drains my battery for some reason.
