Safari on iPad is very slow - takes a few seconds to start, sometimes crashes on startup. Anyone else has similar problems? This started with version 15.2 for me, before that it was stunningly fast

Works fine for me (M1 iPP and mini 6).

Granted, tab groups has meant I only have 10-30 tabs open at a time instead of 100+.

Thats okay, - BUT, I used to have 500 tabs open (the limit) - and it worked perfectly.
Now it doesnt…

On my 2017 iPad Pro (A10X/4GB), I've already had some Safari freezing and crashing even on iOS 13 with less than 200 tabs. One of the reasons why I upgraded to the 2021 iPP.

Yes I read you mention it somewhere.

Unfortionatley this seems to be a software issue - bug, but not a lot of people have it? Or just dont care? Or dont use iPad that heavily…
Reason why I insist its a bug - is because it used to work perfectly on my Air4. I was amazed at how well it used to work, and it started exactly with the system update.

I have the same problem both on my Air4 and M1.
But I already knew its not a hardware issue, instead - seems to be a bug of some kind..

@sparksd no, it doesnt seem to be possible with safari

FIVE HUNDRED…… What’s wrong with add to Favourites Bookmarks?
Seriously, that many open web pages not saved is asking for trouble with memory, reloads, even losing those sites… you probably wouldn’t notice if a loaded site disappeared.

Dont shame now, come on.. ??

Well.
Safari management was done better, and I think it didnt tend to keep each site in memory, but have it just recoredd as a url somewhere, so just open in when you click the tab. It used to work really really good.

you can also try to turn off "HANDoff". Settngs/ General/Airplay & handoff/ Handoff

Also you might want to look at your Extensions in Safari. Try turning all of them off.. restart ipad , then turn them back on 1 at a time... incase there's issue with 1 of them.

Also you can check if you have "private relay(Beta)" on. if its on you can try to turn that off .. icloud/private relay(Beta)

Is this similar to what you are seeing?

View attachment 1993329
No, its definitely not. In your case Safari started loading almost before it even opened (animation finished showing) - so thats how it used to be for me.

Now - for a very weird and unknown reason to me - it tends to stop for a few seconds, and be completely unresponsive. And sometimes crashes on startup as well… I’ll see to record a video of it and post it here tomorrow.

Yeah. I would want to figure that out too. I am guessing you already tried closing all tabs? Does that help at all? Any VPN's installed and running?

Yes, this is happening even if no tabs are open.
And its only happening when safari was unloaded from memory (so first after boot or after a long time of not using safari). When I am just task switching - while safari is active in background - it works normally (just shows instantly and works)

Weird thing is - that complete safari is inresponsive - when started cold - so - I cant open new tab, switch tabs and so on. Its not the rendering thats slow - but the whole browser is irresponsive + sometimes crashes.

Its.. quite unpleasant

no VPN, I tried disabling everytning (what was mentioned here + thinkgs I could think of), but it stays the same.
And is present both on my M1 and my Air

Hmm I think sometimes we don't clear cache memory and this can be a cause to slow down safari on IPad.

You can solve it by clearing cache memories.

Method 1 – For Systems Working on Older Versions Than 10.11

  1. Open the Safari browser on your system.
  2. From the upper-left corner, click on the Safari menu bar.
  3. Choose the “Preferences” tab from the drop-down list.
  4. Next click on the “Advanced” tab. Now tick mark the checkbox against “Show Develop menu in menu bar”.
  5. Exit the Preferences window and open the “Developer” tab.
  6. In the end, select the “Empty cache” option from the drop-down menu.

Method 2 – For Systems Working on 10.11 Version or Later

  1. Launch the Safari browser and open the menu bar.
  2. Next, choose “Reset Safari” under the “Safari” option.
  3. From the new window, checkmark on relevant options and click on the “Reset” button.
  4. In the end, close your active browser and relaunch it.

I believe those instructions are for the Mac?

I wish there was a simple empty cache option on Safari for iOS. Alas, the available option is pretty nuclear and clears everything (Clear History and Website Data) and I believe it’s synced across iOS devices.

Yeah, that's not for the iPad and there should be an option to retain some elements of the data for logins, etc.
