My mother complained that she could no longer sign into her M3 iMac. I discovered that a group of keys on her mini Bluetooth TouchID keyboard had stopped working. About 3 keys on each row, all together. One key started functioning as a show desktop key. Keyboard Viewer showed those keys not lighting up. My mother had an older mini Apple Bluetooth keyboard without Touch ID. I tried connecting that one and to my astonishment the same group of keys failed on that one. This has to be a software issue, but I have never seen this before. Any idea what could be happening?
