Samsung debuts Apple iPod touch knockoff

“Samsung finally copied Apple’s 2007 iPod touch by releasing its own knockoff in 2011,” Obama Pacman reports.

So you can have your Galaxy Player, to go with your Galaxy smartphone - the former of which has already been rendered obsolete by the latter. In turn, the Galaxy Player will fare predictably against the iPod Touch.

Timing seems odd, as the trend seems to be towards smartphones that do double-duty as phone and music player (and more). And given how little traction devices like the Zune had against the iPod, I wonder how this will fare. I suppose Samsung and Google/Android both have some decent brand credibility, so it might work out, but it still strikes me as a bizarre move.

I see it the Galaxy player is a media player only version of the Galaxy phone. Strip out the cellular radio and sell it. Boy what a genius concept.

I know the Nexus is made by Samsung, but after it leaves the store, it is Google's responsibility. Apple takes its users seriously. They also keep phones up to date with the latest OS for the duration of your contract. Samsung updated the Epic 4G to Froyo, late, and only recently made their source code available, so AOSP and Cyanogenmod developers have only just been ableto get something remotely up to date running on it.

Im not pushing my buying habits. I'm just saying, you need to be aware if what you are going into when getting any android device apart from a Nexus device.

1. Apple keeps your phone up to date with parts of a current OS. Not all the features are available.
2. You very clearly said that people only buy Samsung if the can't get Apple or are uneducated about the products, or are fanboys. That's a complete and absolute lie.
3. If a consumer did their research they could find a phone that developers at XDA will support, and so it will get updates regularly (albeit 3rd party ones). If not, it's no ones fault but their own.

I like to know what I'm buying, especially when I'll be stuck with it for up to 2 years. Google showed me all these sites with simple and easy-to-follow guides to do all sorts of new things with my phone. I probably won't need to, since these phones do what I need already, but at least it's there. God, I'd have to be mentally disabled to not find find guides like this on Google. Either way, at least I know what phone I want now.

EDIT: The first letter is not an insult to iOS or WP7, or an ad for Android, I'm simply pointing out that those two platforms are simple and require little prior knowledge from the buyer to be able to use fully. No offence intended.

Ok, so the original Galaxy was Samsung's flagship product. They said it would be up to date, supported OTA updates and was a great device. It was released to market shortly before Android 2.0, I believe, and guess what? They said 'oh there's not enough RAM on the device you just signed up to own for 2 years, you best buy the Galaxy S if you want to be up to date...'

That's what I have a problem with, now I know about how Samsung treats their devices once they sell them, I try to make sure people know everything they need to know. I don't out and out say 'don't buy android' and I'm sorry it wasn't an exhaustitive list of reasons people buy Samsung mobile devices, but I'll suggest to people what I think would be best for them. Which, in my experience, is google experience/nexus or iOS. If I use WP7 and find that I like it, I would suggest that if they wanted rich Xbox live integration.

Hey, I love tech and gadgets as a whole, and whilst the Apple ecosystem is very complete an great for my uses and for most people in my life, I won't evangelize iOS to those already using Android, but I will make sure they won't make the same android based mistakes that I have.
