Samsung debuts Apple iPod touch knockoff

“Samsung finally copied Apple’s 2007 iPod touch by releasing its own knockoff in 2011,” Obama Pacman reports.

“The Samsung Galaxy 4.0 Android MP3 Player, priced at $229, even copied the 2010 4th gen iPod touch pricing of $229,” Obama Pacman reports. “Too bad that right before Samsung introduced its knockoff device, Apple unveiled 2011 Pod touch starting at $199.”

Obama Pacman reports, “The Samsung Galaxy player, is of course larger and bulkier, with the bonus of lower battery life.”

And into a dying media player market? It seems Samsung has little to no concept of . . . time?

So you can have your Galaxy Player, to go with your Galaxy smartphone - the former of which has already been rendered obsolete by the latter. In turn, the Galaxy Player will fare predictably against the iPod Touch.

Timing seems odd, as the trend seems to be towards smartphones that do double-duty as phone and music player (and more). And given how little traction devices like the Zune had against the iPod, I wonder how this will fare. I suppose Samsung and Google/Android both have some decent brand credibility, so it might work out, but it still strikes me as a bizarre move.

I'm curious, what makes it a knock-off, the slate-like style with rounded corners? The OS that functions much like Windows and OS X does with an interactive desktop you can place icons and such anywhere?

Or is it the fact they managed to price competitively?

Or the fact that it is not Apple.

I see it the Galaxy player is a media player only version of the Galaxy phone. Strip out the cellular radio and sell it. Boy what a genius concept.

Sorry LTD this is even pathetic for you. It is simply a galaxy phone for a media player. Boy what a hard concept. You got this from a fanboy site to boot. Sorry but a fanboy article does not make it fact.

Also you left out parts of the article which discredits a lot of your bashing. You left out "Images not to scale." Come on that is just sad. You take a fanboy article already and make it even more so.
Are you so afraid that you have to lie for your pointless bashing?

Oh *LTD*, you're making youself look silly. The PMP has been around for much longer than the iPhone, and that's what this is; a modern PMP.

As Rodimus Prime said, you've picked and chosen bits of an already biased article and somehow managed to make it even less credible.

Even tough its bulkier, heavier, less battery life, more expensive and not as easy to use, lots of Apple haters will get it and actually believe its better than an ipod...

You left out "Images not to scale." [/B]

Obama Pacman reports, “The Samsung Galaxy player, is of course larger and bulkier, with the bonus of lower battery life.”

Meaning, "images not to scale."

Even if I left out "images not to scale", the article still points it out, and *still* calls it a bad knockoff. Which is exactly what it is. LOL

I really like Samsung LCD TVs, not crazy about the fragment Android OS.

Without iTunes and all it brings to the table I have no need for a non Apple media player.

Does not change the fact that you left that part out. A fanboy article from a fanboy site. You manage to make it even more so.
No matter how you cut it LTD you got caught making something even more fanboy base than it already was.

As other pointed out it not a knock off of the touch. Just apple fanboys seem to have a problem understanding that basic concept.

Yet as Apple's supplier for some components, Samsung just can't match them on product life cycle, quality of materials, battery life or user experience when it comes to their own devices.

People only buy their products if they are uninformed, or Apple devices aren't available for them, or they have a hatred to Apple.

(owned an original Galaxy Tab and an Epic 4G. Now own an iPad and iPhone 4 on sprint.)

Or if they prefer them to Apple's products, or if Apple doesn't make the product they require, or if they don't want to spend too much, or if they find that the Samsung product is more suited to the task.

Please don't push your buying habits on others. Use what works for you, but don't tell me why I buy the things I do.

I'm not. I tried really hard for the Samsung products I have bought to work for me but they don't.

The main word of warning I put with Samsung, and anything running Android, is that if you want a phone to stay up to date and to be the best performing phone overall, is to get a Nexus device. At least then, you aren't at the mercy of Samsung's software developers to put their bloat onto the latest version of Android before yo can use it.

I know the Nexus is made by Samsung, but after it leaves the store, it is Google's responsibility. Apple takes its users seriously. They also keep phones up to date with the latest OS for the duration of your contract. Samsung updated the Epic 4G to Froyo, late, and only recently made their source code available, so AOSP and Cyanogenmod developers have only just been ableto get something remotely up to date running on it.

Im not pushing my buying habits. I'm just saying, you need to be aware if what you are going into when getting any android device apart from a Nexus device.

1. Apple keeps your phone up to date with parts of a current OS. Not all the features are available.
2. You very clearly said that people only buy Samsung if the can't get Apple or are uneducated about the products, or are fanboys. That's a complete and absolute lie.
3. If a consumer did their research they could find a phone that developers at XDA will support, and so it will get updates regularly (albeit 3rd party ones). If not, it's no ones fault but their own.

A what? What's an XDA? And why should I do research? I'm busy. Why not just support my phone? Why the confusion? And why the difference between Google updates and 3rd party updates? Who's doing what? What's that you say? I need to do MORE research? I'm busy representing clients in court/performing surgical procedures/lecturing most of the week/managing a business. I've got other stuff to research, like case law/horseback riding for the kids/our next vacation/mortgage rates for the house we plan to buy/my stock portfolio/auto re-financing/overseas property for our new company office/my kid's homework.

Now you want me to do extra research to make sure a damn phone is gonna work like it should work in the first place??

Why can't I just get a phone that just works and that the original people who made it will stand behind?

Signed,

Joe Average (and at this rate, another future Apple user.)

What? Me research something I'm going to spend money on? What a silly thought. I like to throw my money in the wind and see what product it buys me. How dare people try make me look at something before buying it and assessing whether it suits my needs!

I like to know what I'm buying, especially when I'll be stuck with it for up to 2 years. Google showed me all these sites with simple and easy-to-follow guides to do all sorts of new things with my phone. I probably won't need to, since these phones do what I need already, but at least it's there. God, I'd have to be mentally disabled to not find find guides like this on Google. Either way, at least I know what phone I want now.

Signed,

Bill Average (at this rate a future user of any platform thanks to a 20 minute Google session)

EDIT: The first letter is not an insult to iOS or WP7, or an ad for Android, I'm simply pointing out that those two platforms are simple and require little prior knowledge from the buyer to be able to use fully. No offence intended.

Ok, so the original Galaxy was Samsung's flagship product. They said it would be up to date, supported OTA updates and was a great device. It was released to market shortly before Android 2.0, I believe, and guess what? They said 'oh there's not enough RAM on the device you just signed up to own for 2 years, you best buy the Galaxy S if you want to be up to date...'

That's what I have a problem with, now I know about how Samsung treats their devices once they sell them, I try to make sure people know everything they need to know. I don't out and out say 'don't buy android' and I'm sorry it wasn't an exhaustitive list of reasons people buy Samsung mobile devices, but I'll suggest to people what I think would be best for them. Which, in my experience, is google experience/nexus or iOS. If I use WP7 and find that I like it, I would suggest that if they wanted rich Xbox live integration.

Hey, I love tech and gadgets as a whole, and whilst the Apple ecosystem is very complete an great for my uses and for most people in my life, I won't evangelize iOS to those already using Android, but I will make sure they won't make the same android based mistakes that I have.

So boss.king, I'm sorry if I hurt your feelings.

I guess if you see Samsung's phones as knockoff iPhones, I guess you're gonna see this as a knockoff iPod Touch.

The Samsung Galaxy Player is not just another cheap ripoff of an Apple product.

As anyone can plainly see, the Galaxy Player a cheap ripoff of the Microsoft Zune HD.
Which itself is a cheap ripoff of the Apple iPod touch.... :p

Samsung is such a pathetic company.

I boycott every product they sell and hope others do too.

It's your loss. On both points.

Obviously you've got no clue about Samsung in it's role on the world stage.

Just because at the present time Apple Tax has made their numbers top the charts, is in no way indicative of their staying power.

Samsung has depth like Apple can only dream of.

Apples at the top of the non essential gadget business, but for how long?

When the next fad comes along... Or the economy continues to tank, the fanbois are in for a wakeup call bigger than a 6.0 on the San Andreas.
