I was always of the same belief, especially after a few years ago testing out a family members Google Home Mini and asking it all sorts. However, apart from Google Maps queries or the fact it can read out Google search results, it pretty much have 'virtual assistant social anxiety' when it comes to communicating with other apps, namely Spotify which I was shocked at as surely it's such a prominently chosen option for music on Android .. and all permissions were granted too.Your experience with google assistant is interesting. I've used Google Assistant and Siri extensively, and I literally cannot think of a single thing Siri does better. Google Assistant is so far ahead of Siri that they're not even comparable IMO.
Like I'd ask it to shuffle all songs, it'd understand me on screen.... and do nothing. other times it would just simply start playing all my music from the top. It wouldn't play albums or songs I asked for :S
