Not sure what you mean? I have Catalina on an external samsung SSD - evo 500g - no issues with a slow boot

In fact hard to tell the difference from the Mohave - Internal SSD drive
Same with me, but booting my late 2012 Mac Mini running Mojave V10.14.6 and with a Samsung 840 Pro 256 gig SSD is faster than booting that same machine from an external Samsung 860 EVO 500 gig SSD with OS 10.15.1 (the newest version of Catalina).

I have been using Samsung's T-series external SSDs since the T1 and have never bothered with their proprietary software; no need for it. Apple provides a perfectly decent encryption system if someone needs to do that. When I purchase a new T5 or X5 I promptly erase the data on it in Disk Utility and format it to APFS. Never had any problems with it. I don't use Time Machine, though; I prefer other methods of backing up my data.
Same with me, with my Samsung 840 Pro 256 gig SSD, 2 Samsung 850 Pro 52 gig SSDs, and my Samsung 860 EVO 500 Gig SSD. I also initially erased and formatted each of those SSDs, and they work fine.

What if I cleared the Samsung software and just want to use it as empty drive? I noticed the ssd is sloppy with time machine backups. not wanting to back up data
Actually, you would Erase and Format the entire SSD. That is what you should do no matter what you want to use it for.

Ah, that's a good point; I indeed do use the T series external SSDs only with Macs; I have not used Windows on my own home personal machines since 2005 and have no plans to do so ever again. I hadn't realized that Windows doesn't provide a way of encrypting one's files and folders. Interesting....
It's not that Windows doesn't provide a way of encrypting data. As the poster you replied to said: "the Samsung software gives you encryption for both platforms."
