Samsung Innovation: the Smart Window

I don't usually start threads, but thought this was pretty cool.

Samsung's Smart Windows which can be used in homes will be going into production this year. They are an extension of the smaller transparent LCD screens that Samsung showed off last year.

See this YouTube video for a demo. I'm thinking that this would be pretty cool in a kid's nursery or bedroom, especially with animated characters. It could also be used for a side door window, with the current weather and appointments on it. I'm less sure about using it at work, but perhaps some of you can think of uses for it.

I have always wished my car windows could be tinted like this, but in a gradient manner, not blinds. It looks awesome, though. You could make a window to a brick wall / ghetto be a view from a high-rise over New York or a beach in the tropics, haha!

Really? I mean yea... Its Samsung they gank near everything. But complaining about a very basic weather widget? Give us a break. It doesn't look totally unlike an old vista desktop widget I might have used in the past.

Plugs, connectors, window displays, phone designs, smart covers, weather widgets, boxes/packaging. Even Apple's marketing. Where does it end?

No one else is doing this.

Do note, that the Android OEM most closely "following" (that's describing it too nicely) Apple is also the most successful Android OEM. Just so happens. All these mysterious "coincidences" . . .

Before we all get off topic. I though this was something that was really pretty cool. I would love to have one them in my future house. It would be great to have it as a window I could quickly look at and get the information.

you know you are showing us how little you really know about android or anything non apple there.

Sorry it is a basic weather widget. Go look at 100's of them out there and you will see they all look very similar.
I mean OMG it has what the current weather like icon at the top and a 5 day weather forecast. I mean come on here. There are better things to scream coping on but this is pretty bad.

Also I find it funny that because it is rather innovating your only choice it to try to attack them on something that is pretty stupid and off topic.

It's a window pane with a built-in display.

I wonder what its frame rate is? Good enough for videos? Or just good enough to animate a view of clouds, waterfall, forest etc.

I like the ability to act as blinds as well.

Edit: oh sweet. It's not only partially powered by the sun, but it can also act as a 46" TV. Well, that answers my animation question! Perhaps it also gives us an idea as to what the price will be.

very true. The biggest problem I see with the window is the house would kind of need to be design with that window so to speak in mind. My parents house for example does not really have a any windows were that cool piece of tech would fit. My old apartment sliding glass door was a good maybe location.

I could think of places that have a wall almost as a window would be great.

Limited use but clearly the way of the future for tomorrow smart house.

Regardless, Samsung don't seem to be trying very hard to make their own Brand image.

By all means, you need to waste some time researching this critical issue, and inform us who made the weather widget first... Yahoo or Apple. Then we can identify who the IP thief is. I don't care, or I'd look it up myself.

Honestly I think it is kind of sad that we got off topic with something so minor. It was not even a focus of the thing or what they were showing off.

The widget has nothing to do with what was being shown off and I think the some people started pointing it out a non issue thing in it just to throw off the fact that this is really a pretty cool piece of tech.

You are being daft. This thing is a display with a working alpha channel, so it can be actually transparent, and with a touchscreen. Because it is a display, it will be connected to some computer, and there will be some OS running on that computer, for example Windows, and there will be some software running on that OS, for example some Yahoo weather widget. And because it is the Yahoo weather widget, it looks exactly like - guess what - the Yahoo weather widget.

Cool tech but the I think widgets like twitter are pointless on this thing.
The recipes widget on a kitchen window would be great.
And weather? C'mon, just look through the window.

Perhaps as an inhome device there's limited use... but I can see the potential for immediate business / industry uses. I can imagine it being on a patient's window in the hospital and the doctors can pull up the patient information from it. Or maybe it'll be used as part of a high tech advertising display or information kiosk. Or maybe a high end hotel will decide to install them in their rooms.

It's quite exciting!

I think it would be nicer to have this in a mirror than a window, or at least have a second pane of glass on the window to protect the screen.

This is just too freakin cool. The internet is full of buzz about this display. Every major tech website is reporting this news. This was the coolest thing in CES 2012 (and I read about Lumia before someone mentions that). Nothing exceptional in that apart from unibody design.

People, please stop all these BS about weather widgets. They are talking about a translucent window display where you can watch TV, use as computer, blocks views from opposite side and uses solar energy - and we debate on shape of sun/cloud in weather widget?? Seriously??

Are we going back to in time to search for the man who made the first fire and ask him whether he was an Apple/Google/Samsung/MS employee?
