I don't get how this turned into an Apple vs Samsung debate. I guess whatever Samsung does will cause people to drop the copycat bomb. whatever the smart window idea is cool.

I think it would be nicer to have this in a mirror than a window,

That suggestion reminds me of Corning's "Day Made of Glass", around 37 seconds into that YouTube video link.

Actually, as I watch through it, quite a few things in that concept video could apply.

or at least have a second pane of glass on the window to protect the screen.

Good idea, like a lot of people do with stained glass windows: cover it outside with a tough plastic window as protection. (We have one like that.)

I think it would be cool for a mirror. The only problem I could see with a mirror is it would need some back lighting to be effective. Hell even the window could used the back lighting to be even better. It cool but at the same time it does have its limitation as the lighting for the LCD panel is going to be un even and not all a single color (aka white)

Well that is an easy thing to answer. *LTD* came in and started trying to bash it. I among others sadly got sucked into it.

I made one of these years ago when tearing down a defective LCD. Just remove the backlight and diffuser - and you've got a transparent / translucent LCD. I had some ideas for it, but ultimately just scrapped the plan, because it did not have a backlight - so dark viewing was out. Also wasn't so keen on showing the neighborhood a mirror image of what I was looking at...

Still, neat idea though... Unfortunately it's a matter of time before these are installed in train and aircraft windows - so I can be forced to stare at even more ads.

Good point. I say it was a Samsung descendant that discovered fire.

But an Apple descendent actually invented fire. Samsung just "discovered" it. ;) :p

All kidding aside, i wonder if you can run any OS on the product. Think about how surreal it would be to run Windows on your Window :D

Yeah I could see that happening. Remember on this Samsung one it is one way so people on the out side can not see in or what is on it

Nice concept.
Let's hope it turns into an successful product and not go the way of Microsoft Surface.

Plugs, connectors, window displays, phone designs, smart covers, weather widgets, boxes/packaging. Even Apple's marketing. Where does it end?

No one else is doing this.

Do note, that the Android OEM most closely "following" (that's describing it too nicely) Apple is also the most successful Android OEM. Just so happens. All these mysterious "coincidences" . . .

Sorry but you're just trolling now. Only Apple is allowed to innovate?

I can see a huge potential for this technology in a heads up display application.

You don't need to coat the window to get light to reflect off of it - so that could make it far easier for a daylight HUD.

It would probably improve safety if police cars had that technology in their windshield - they could see their laptop information while keeping their eyes looking forward.

Would be snappy for GPS, for the same reason. Sell a little window that you can suction cup to your windshield - you can have something to point out directions, while your eyes are on the road.

Looking forward to when these are commonplace.

That's the first thing I thought of. And somewhere down the line, stick a few cameras in the car and use Augmented Reality to overlay the GPS on the road.

Very cool stuff.
