Hopefully, as good as Samsung Portable SSD T5, and with larger capacities (4, 8 & 16 TB) for Mac.

I'm going to -guess- that the T7 will be a USB-c 3.1 gen2 form factor drive that supports up to 1000mbps transfers...

I guess you meant 1,000 MB/s (not 1,000 mbps = 125 MB/s). How to accomplish 1,000 MB/s without RAID 0 on USB 3.1 Type C (reversible) Generation 2 interface? SSD using it reach about 500 MB/s, like Samsung Portable SSD T5. The ones doubling that have RAID 0 inside.

I want to buy another T5 but I'll hold off for this instead! I know it's petty but the only reason I'm not buying an X5 is because they're fugly as.

I thought the same as you the first time that I saw Samsung Portable SSD X5 on Internet, but I also have such model and it is nice as well. Samsung Portable SSD T5 is more minimalistic, but X5 needs to be larger to prevent heat throttling. Indeed, while T5 keeps cool even when booting and working from it all day long, X5 gets hot during usage.

"I guess you meant 1,000 MB/s (not 1,000 mbps = 125 MB/s)"

No, I meant "1,000mbps", just like I wrote.

The current SATA-based USB3 drives generally see reads about 430mbps.

I'm expecting the T7 to use a USB-c 3.1 gen2 connection and yield reads around 930mbps. The "theoretical maximum" is supposed to be 1,000mbps (or, "1gbps"), but that's "theoretical", not in practice.

Then, why current USB SSD reaching about 1,000 MB/s have RAID 0 inside, whereas without such RAID 0 they reach about 500 MB/s?

Theoretical max for usb 3.1 gen 1 (formerly usb 3.0) is 5Gbps, gen 2 is 10Gbps.

I guess they will use NVMe PCIE as what SanDisk did to their Extreme Pro Portable SSD.

And the major difference between the Samsung X5 and Samsung T7 may be the port they use (thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.1 Gen2 respectively).

Actually I'm very curious about how will they control the temperature to reach good performance since I have just diy an external ssd using Samsung 970 EVO and a ssd enclosure, which will get very hot even in the idle state.

That is why I prefer to purchase full complete solutions (SSD inside plus enclosure) from the same manufacturer, even if more expensive.

On the other hand, check out (good news):

Brand new higher-capacity internal SSD (4 TB & 8 TB) from Micron will allow higher-capacity external portable SSD

Samsung Portable SSD T7 Touch (note its name: Touch instead of Plus):

Coming 1/21/20: Samsung T7 Touch Portable SSD - 2TB - USB 3.2 (MU-PC2T0S/WW)

It is about twice as fast for sequential benchmarking (1,050 & 1,000 MB/s read/write, respectively) than the great Samsung Portable SSD T5 (540 Mb/s). Hopefully, Samsung will release soon higher than 2TB capacity external portable SSD (4TB, 8TB and 16TB), perhaps with the "Plus" name.

Updated trademark information for the "Plus" model as of 9th January 2020:

SAMSUNG PORTABLE SSD T7 PLUS TRADEMARK INFORMATION

United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)
SAMSUNG PORTABLE SSD T7 PLUS

So, it seems that indeed a new "Plus" model will be released soon. Hopefully, with higher capacities (4TB, 8TB and 16TB).

I've just bought a new Samsung Portable SSD T7. I've plugged into my MacMini (late 2014
3 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i7 and running iOS 11.6.2) and it's not appearing in Finder. Neither is it appearing in Disk Utilities, even when I click the "View" menu and click "all devices". What am I doing wrong?

Do you have a second cable you could try?
Do you have access to ANOTHER Mac that you could try?
Do you have access to a PC that you might try?

A new rugged Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield has been just released, albeit no 4 TB option so far…

Samsung Launches New T7 Shield Portable SSD

Good news. Finally, 4TB models:

Samsung Portable SSD T7: MU-PC4T0T
Samsung Portable SSD T7 Touch: MU-PC4T0S
Samsung Portable SSD T7 Shield: MU-PE4T0S

They show searching Google and in Samsung Germany (now removed).

How long do you think it will be before they release an 8TB version?
