I'm actually patiently waiting for this since I see nothing on the horizon that interest me. In the market for a phablet. Something between "5.5-6. But if a foldable display can be shaped like a book or unfurled, maybe it is better wait for a "8 display that can be folded or unfurled.

This foldable display is actually more practical than dual-edged since carrying "8 displays would be much easier to carry around. If they release this rumored "Galaxy X" series next year, it probably needs a couple years of refinement. Wait until 2019-2020 for refinement similar to what the Note 3 and 4 did to the first one when nobody had adjusted to that form factor yet and the specs were drastically improved. A $35-$60 quad core Moto E 4G or most phones under $100-$200 would easily beat a dual core Note 1 in benchmark these days.

This is another gamechanging device from Samsung like the Note did in 2011. I realized while the S7 edge is first time an S model surpassed a Note, those dual edges and prone to look smudgy the moment you touch it isn't all that practical for everyday usage. We can easily get the same UI from a regular screen. All fo sho. At least foldable display can make us go after "8-10 displays while lessening the burden to fit them in our pocket. Interesting technology in a saturated market right now becoming stagnant and stale from all the cookie cutter devices out there. Something fresh needs to come out to get us excited again.

How will they solve the battery problem? There are flexible batteries out?
I would guess they'd pick a half of the chassis for the battery.

I'll happily Guinea pig this as soon as it is out. i have my iPhone SE and my trusty IPad Mini 4 as my anchor devices. The slot currently occupied by my 6S Plus can go toward experimenting with new shinies.

I just turned 50. I paid my dues for decades being frugal and making sure my family's needs are taken care of. Now I'm going to be a cutting edge mom and eventually grandma with the years I've got left. :D Or until Skynet or the Zombie Apocalypse gets us all.

Edit to add: I have the Olympics opening ceremony on and Samsung is advertising heavily for the Olympics.

Right at 2:04 you can see a tablet folded in half. Obviously too large for a smartphone, but for a tablet that would be awesome.

Loved the video. Thanks! And even before that folding tablet, I liked the smartphone you could bend around your wrist as a bracelet. Clever the way that it bends in small chunks.

Yeah, they've been the exclusive Olympics communications sponsor for the past couple of decades. Each time they have given tens of thousands of phones and smartphones to the athletes and workers.

They created a special Olympics comm platform, first deployed in Athens in 2004 on a special edition smartphone, whch gives event schedules, locations, blogging/messaging, and push notices.

The funny thing is the South Korean team was one of the few that didn't have any team members waving any smart phones around, let alone Samsungs. Of course the North Koreans didn't, either.

I thought it was amusing how the Chinese team was waving so many iPhones around. I didn't see any Samsungs among them. I think I saw a Xiaomi or Huawei sprinkled in, though.

A bracelet smartphone is genius IMO. You don't have to hold it, yet it's always available at a glance or raising your arm. You don't have to fully fold it, just bend it some. Yeah I know fashion wise not everyone will want a phone hanging off their wrist, but it's a nice option to have and if you don't want it on your wrist then just straighten it out and put it in your pocket.
