If they do, more power to 'em. I kind of hope they do, maybe it'll give my old Android phone with NFC something to do with said NFC.

Smartphones don't really bring us any killer new features anymore if we upgrade regularly. I mean; proper full web browsing was a killer feature, as was a camera which pretty much made compact cameras extinct, and so too 4G/LTE.
What more can they bring us over the next 18 months? A bigger screen for sure, but Android users have had that feature for years.
It will be a complete game changer. Samsung has shot their load as far a features.
No doubt the iPhone 6 will sell a ton.
As far Samsung goes, they were ahead of Apple when it came to the smaller screen tablet market, and the larger screen phone market.
Apple followed with the iPad mini, and now a larger phone and maybe even a phablet...
... while Samsung is working to perfect folding screens which could replace both device categories.

Apple entering the phablet arena is not a good sign from Apple. But I still want to hear why Apple's rumoured phablets will be better than the competitions. ...
I still don't see why the iPad mini is needed. But I guess it's selling well enough to be viable. And by viable I mean profits gained from the iPad mini. I don't give a **** how many sales it has. Profits made is all that matters.
If you are trying to say Apple is copying Samsung now, I guess your agenda could be proved right.
I agree 100%. I think we are waiting to see what new tech Apple can bring to the iPhone 6 and new iPads. Just a larger screen will not sway the Android crowd. That's a good point. Samsung has their S Pen (Wacom digitizer ) built into their phablet, which is a selling feature.
It's possible that Apple will have some kind of unique feature for their phablet as well.
My point exactly. The odd sized devices are a love/hate thing. You love them or you don't. It's cool that you do and you have found a purpose for them. I think the question here is not should either side make them, that question is already answered. Both sides (Android/Apple) are making them. The big question is which side will add the best tech to theirs to get the sales.I started buying 7" Android tablets right away. They're a great size for the bathroom or bedroom, while leaving the big tablets in the living room or office.
Now, we love our iPad mini and fight over it. I might have to get another.
I agree the game today is larger screens. And Apple is skating to where the puck is now. But will larger screens be the in thing tomorrow. I think Apple need to keep skating to where the puck is tomorrow.Nope, my post had nothing to do with copying. More like Apple is skating towards where the screen size puck has already gone.
It was a mild rebuttal to the claim that Samsung has shot their load. Clearly they have other technology on the horizon.
Of course, Apple probably does too. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if we see flexible phones from Samsung, and flexible wristband smart devices from Apple.
As much as I complain about odd sized screen devices, they are not all that bad. People (like you) have found uses for them. My worry is is Apple investing in today with this or tomorrow (like Apple has in the past).
The 5.5" is not a confirmed productApple entering the phablet arena is not a good sign from Apple. But I still want to hear why Apple's rumoured phablets will be better than the competitions. And why I should even buy into the phablet market, a market that (right now) is a jack of all trades and master of none. Apple will have to do one hell of a salesman's job on the iPhone 6 keynote if they want me converted. And a lot of others feel the same.

If you are trying to say Apple is copying Samsung now, I guess your agenda could be proved right. Apple is entering some of the markets that were dominated by Samsung/android. Those being the phablet arena. Apple made their phablet tablet (iPad mini) and now reportedly are making a phablet phone (iPhone 6).
I think Jobs understood it better. Don't make something popular but useless (netbook). Make something better to replace said popular but useless category. He pushed the tablets to replace the netbook category. Cook and Co is not doing this. Cook and Co believe they can make better phablets. They are not looking at phablets and thinking what can we make that is better than the useless* phablets. That's the difference between Jobs Apple and Cook Apple.
(Useless* has the asterix to say useless is debatable. Some agree with phablets are usless and others will defend phablets till they die. And both sides will not find any common ground anytime soon.)

Apparently Samsung is not having a good quarter and thinks this is generalizable to the industry, not just themselves or their specific products.
