Samsung sells 40 million S4s!

Pretty impressive. It really is a great phone (not as good as my note 3, but still). Apple fanbois will debate this number.

Apple still Managed to sell almost 35 million "old" 8-9 month old iPhone 5 plus iPhone 4S and 4 in Q2 2013. So even if u say iPhone 5 accounted for 1/2 those sales of the 35 million. You are still looking at Apple selling almost 20 million iPhone 5 in 3 month time period from April 2013-June 2013.

We won't know how many 5S will have sold in a six month period until Q1 2014 reports.

Only because the contract price probably fluctuates. I don't mean that in a bad way, but Samsung pretty much doesn't control it, and carriers will usually try and win you over by offering it for $0 or just $99. Currently $140 on Amazon.

For example, Samsung has more than one flagship phone... they sell both the S and the Note as their premium models.

Currently their flagships are the S4 and Note 3, but they still sell quite a few S3 and Note 2 phones.

I would prefer to know how many phones actually end up in a consumer's hand. I am almost sure these numbers include vendors / shops / retailer purchases, but not actually devices sold to the end customer.

really? So what does "vendors / shops / retailer purchases" do with phones? Do they sell them? If they return them to Samsung....they will come off the sales figures......this is business inventory 101.....

Of course they include sales to vendors. Everyone reports the same numbers... even Apple. No one reports only sold to customer.

Apple was giving the iPhone 5 away for free for almost three straight months through third party retailers with the "trade in any working smart phone", promos.

Where in the world did you get that Apple has sold 32-34 million in one month? I have seen no where that is reporting these crazy high numbers for the 5S. This is what they may get in 9 months, but there is no way they have sold 32 million in this last month.

That is not the point.....would have could have but didn't...Apple new full well what the demand was going to be. The fact that Apple cannot or would not meet the demand says nothing about Samsung. Sales to vendors are counted as sales.......Apple does that too. The iPhones shipped to the mobile carriers are sales to customers unless they are returned and removed from sales figures. There is not doubt that the iPhone is the single best selling mobile phone on the market.....but that margin and accomplishment is getting smaller every year.

Apple was selling the iPhone 5 as the flagship, 4s, and 4 all at the same time. They count their sales with all these phones too. Yes Samsung has 2 flagships at a time, but saying they are selling the note 2, and S3 is the same thing as Apple selling the 4, and 4S.

That would be sales for all iPhones not just the 5S. That would include the 5S, 5C, and 4S. Sorry but the iPhone 5S was not anywhere close to 32 million. Even if they made more there were not 32 million phones that would have been sold.

Ah ok, I must have read that wrong then. Either way, if the 5s sold over 9 million in its first weekend, I think its safe to say that number has grown quite a bit in a month.

Heh, you clearly do not know Samsungs product cycles. The s4 will become their introductory contract model and become available to prepaid carriers like VM, BOOST etc. No different then how Apple always maintained a "tweener" with the previous year flagship being the step down model.

I can tell you that there are loads of iPhone 5's for ATT/Sprint sitting on retailers shelves, right now.

The 5 slowed down to a snails pace... they started giving them away for free, on contract, as I mentioned above for three straight months... and they still did not manage to sell through inventory prior to the 5S release.
