For free, like the 4s? Or the 4 before it, or the 3GS before that?

C'mon, let's remove the blinders and be realistic here people.

Thats like saying Ford is better than Chevrolet because Ford sold more of their entire inventory of vehicles than Chevrolet sold of its Camaro. Apples to oranges...

Yes, I understand that but you are comparing hundreds of Android devices (many given away free, BOGO or VERY cheap) to ONE iPhone. No one Android device outsells the iPhone, not even the S4.

Really?

What is it with the selective reading? They were giving the iPhone 5 away for free for almost three straight months!

Talk about the density! No one is comparing quality, only sales figures due to sales strategies, lol.

I agree with you....the iPhone is the single best selling smart phone on the market. Also how much is the older iPhones selling for? Yes...some are going for free and or a very drastically reduced price if you renew your contract with your carrier.
But if Apple reduces its market space by being the ONLY vendor to sell iOS devices......then that is Apples fault. Not the many vendors that do sell Android devices/models.
Look at table 3 here http://www.gartner.com/newsroom/id/2573415
Those are drastic numbers in smart phone sales. Apple is number 3 worldwide. Granted those numbers will get closer by year end.

Both companies sell lots of phones that much is clear, whether they sell them for $500 or $5 it should only matter to the stockholders.

My question is why do some of you care so much if your phone works for your needs? Does it make your iPhone a bad choice if your neighbor chooses an S4?

I'm glad there is competition between companies, it gives us choices.

Pretty sure that article says SALES. Not talking about free phones, SALES.

Ken,
Articles are great for basic information, but they tend to be incorrect in one way or another. Writers or their editors have agenda's to fill. As Denzel put it in 'Training Day', "This is a newspaper. It's 90 per cent bullsh#t, but it's entertaining. That's why I read it, because it entertains me."

The fact is, Apple reports sales the same way as every other company. If you want, you can download Apple's 10K annual report and scroll down to page 26. I have included the cited paragraph for your review:

Apple Form 10K
Annual Report Filed Oct 31, 2012
Revenue Recognition
Net sales consist primarily of revenue from the sale of hardware, software, digital content and applications, peripherals, and service and support contracts. The Company recognizes revenue when persuasive evidence of an arrangement exists, delivery has occurred, the sales price is fixed or determinable, and collection is probable. Product is considered delivered to the customer once it has been shipped and title and risk of loss have been transferred. For most of the Company’s product sales, these criteria are met at the time the product is shipped. For online sales to individuals, for some sales to education customers in the U.S., and for certain other sales, the Company defers revenue until the customer receives the product because the Company retains a portion of the risk of loss on these sales during transit.

Additionally, Apple does not break sales of individual units out during quarterly reports. They never have, nor do I expect they ever will. (The only reason a company gives out opening weekend numbers, or milestone numbers in Samsung's case, is if it benefits the company in promoting the phone. Its marketing, nothing more. And one should never try to extrapolate future numbers off a snapshot in time.) Anyone that tries to break out individual phone sales is doing so at their best guess. Only Apple knows the real numbers and they ain't sharing. If someone other than Tim Cook (or repeats his official statement on the matter) says they know how many 5S or 5C or 5's were sold, they are lying. Don't trust the info.

That said, Apple sells a crap-ton of iPhones. Samsung sells a crap-ton of smartphones. Don't buy into the shipped vs sold fanboy game. It isn't worth it. But, that is just my opinion on the matter. :p

Considering I'm more of an HTC fan and have been turned off by Samsung's cheating benchmark scores and hiring people to bash HTC online, that is still an impressive number.

If I get let go of my animosity towards Samsung and Apple, you can say I would go to one of them in a heartbeat. But I root for the underdogs like HTC, Sony, or Huawei.

The thing I like from Samsung even if I despise their redundant plastic designs, some of the colors used with TouchWiz, and their cheating/bullying is they are the only OEM that still offers removable battery and memory slot. It might not seem important but it starts to in the longer run.

Honestly, I thought 32 GB was enough for me for awhile. Now it isnt esp for HD videos. Many phones that offer a memory slot can go up to 32 GB max. But the Samsung flagships can go up to 64 GB and prices for those cards are dropping. And S4 and Note 3 offer things like the HTC One did like WiFi ac and IR blaster. Samsung has been forward thinking with their flagships. S4 is a really good phone. Rivals the One in many areas and beats it in a few areas like camera and batt life.
