Apparently the smartphone numbers (that Samsung is hiding) include the tablet numbers as well, which are probably in the basement.

No wonder. When you're half-assing the most progressive market segment that is otherwise primed for massive growth, you'll probably not want people to know the full extent of your fail.

if it was bad they could report them and use it as a defense in the case with Apple showing that it is having little effect on sales.

I would not be surprise if it is exactly the reason they stated and that was so Apple could not use it as a legal attack against them.
What Amazes me is if you used any of those devices for more than 5 minutes you would quickly see they are not a rip off of Apple and very easy to tell the difference between. Hell you could do it in a matter of seconds if you have the device. Marketing not withstanding. Marketing is full if BS and 1/10 truth no matter what company. Apple is pretty full of it in marketing.

Exactly.

Another note: Samsung is not above obfuscating, covering up or outright lying about facts. They lied about sold/vs shipped numbers, etc. Before.

Um, that comment makes no sense whatsoever.

Since Samsung didn't put out any totals, they couldn't hide tablet sales in those nonexistent numbers.

The only smartphone sales Samsung has bragged about, were Galaxy S2 sales, which itself was very unusual for them. As for tablets, clearly Apple is worried that the 10" Tab is competitive, otherwise they wouldn't be trying to so hard to stop its sale.

Edit: Oh, I think I see. You think that the reason Samsung isn't giving out smartphone numbers, even though the official count could possibly surpass Apple's, is because they also don't want to give out tablet numbers. They could do one without doing the other.

I would not be surprised if it is exactly the reason they stated and that was so Apple could not use it as a legal attack against them.

Actually, the WSJ suggested that. Samsung only said, "As competition intensifies, there are increased risks that the information we provide may adversely affect our own businesses." That applies to all their divisions, as they want to avoid speculation about future profits.

Again, when Samsung talked about Galaxy sales, that was an aberration in their usual mode of operation. Samsung has traditionally avoided breaking out any division's products sales. Now they're going back to that mode.

And do you have a source for that or are you making up your own facts again?

when did i make up my own fact?

Here you go:

SAMSUNG LIE NUMBER 1

After boasting last fall that sales of its Galaxy Tab were "faster than expected" and had reached 2 million, Samsung has now admitted to analysts that its figures were only "sell-in" inventory shipped to retailers.

Come on stop twisting facts. Also anything that is from an Apple site on this matter is invalid. Those articles are generally twisted and written to stroke the egos of Apple fans so lets face it they are not going to be very truthful.

Classical lost in translations stuff going from koren to English. The stuff is basically translations problems.
This is not a lie but translations errors that were getting cleaned up.

1st This is a blog post from prototype device.
2nd other 2 articles only are using same blog post

Please provide a more recent one because guess what It is on market so please provide better proof than a blog post on a prototype

Umm marketing department. Sorry but find me a marketing department that does not lie.
That was marketing. That is standard practice.

Hum.. you do realise that the article is based on the Galaxy Tab 10.1V, which is 10mm thick. The actual Galaxy Tab 10.1 is a redesigned form factor that is indeed thinner than iPad 2.

But don't let the facts get in the way of a good bashing. ;) The guy from Information Week simply based his subjective observation based on the 10.1V model instead of the 10.1 model that shipped.

The confusion stems from using the 10.1V, but naming it 10.1 during the CTIA tradeshow to show off TouchWiz 4.0 :

http://www.engadget.com/2011/03/25/samsungs-original-galaxy-tab-10-1-renamed-the-tab-10-1v-thicke/

So Samsung didn't lie and you just proved to us you basically aren't quite as informed as you pretend to be. ;)

The words quite "small" and quite "smooth" may have been translated incorrectly (i doubt that), but i'ts still FACT that they tried to imply and dupe everyone into thinking that retailer sell ins were consumer sales.

Fact: Samsung LIED and told everyone that their new tablet/prototype was thinner than than the iPad 2 when in fact it was THICKER. SAMSUNG WAS COMPARING THEIR PROTOTYPE to the iPad 2. All Samsung had was a prototype AT THAT TIME.

Umm marketing department. Sorry but find me a marketing department that does not lie.

EXCEPT Samsung told everyone they were CONSUMERS.

Samsung's PR boss Kim Titus introduced the video saying, "for this project, Samsung invited consumers from a variety of backgrounds to choose and test out a Samsung Galaxy Tab. I think you're going to find the results very interesting."

The final product was and that is all what matters. Prototypes are called prototypes for a reason, they are not final products. Samsung never claimed that their prototype is thinner than the iPad 2.

This would be a valid point if the prototype was thinner but the final product wasn't. However, this is not the case.

EXCEPT Samsung told everyone they were CONSUMERS.

So Samsung's PR department is the only one who makes things up? After all, actors are still consumers.

Except Samsung allowed people to use and review the 10.1 prototype.

"The new 10.1-incher (and its 8.9″ sibling) were inside glass cases, and they weren’t powered on. I also discovered that my friend Fritz Nelson of InformationWeek had beat me to the booth–and he told me that he was trying to get Samsung to give him a Tab he could hold and judge.
Looks like he succeeded–he’s published a CTIA tablet roundup that includes a couple of comparison shots of the iPad 2 and a prototype of the new 10.1″ Galaxy Tab–ones which he says show that the Tab–supposedly 8.6mm to the iPad 2′s 8.8mm–is very slightly thicker than the iPad 2. I guess we’ll figure out what the deal is when the Tab shows up in stores, which it’s supposed to do in June."

http://technologizer.com/2011/03/25...t-its-figure-and-about-those-galaxy-tab-fans/

This is probably what happened. they saw the iPad 2 to be way thinner than their prototype. went back to the drawing board and tried to make the Galaxy thinner.

Apple iPad 2 Prompts Samsung to Rethink Galaxy Tab 10.1 Choices

“We will have to improve the parts that are inadequate," Samsung Executive Vice President Lee Don-Joo told the Yonhap news agency, according to Physorg.com, reflecting on how Samsung’s contribution to a market spurred by the original iPad now holds up to Apple’s next-generation tablet. “Apple made it very thin.”

The words quite "small" and quite "smooth" may have been translated incorrectly (i doubt that),

It wasn't a translation since it was English. It was a transcription mistake. Anyone who listened to the call clearly heard "smooth".

Before throwing in a comment like "I doubt that", you could've tracked down and listened to the call yourself, like others of us did.

(Steve Jobs also repeated that transcription mistake onstage long after the correction was well known. Either he/his handlers are clueless or they repeated the mistake intentionally. Neither answer speaks well for them.)
but i'ts still FACT that they tried to imply and dupe everyone into thinking that retailer sell ins were consumer sales.

Made up news drama. They reported sales the same way Apple and every other smartphone supplier does. No one reports end sale numbers.

Fact: Samsung LIED and told everyone that their new tablet/prototype was thinner than than the iPad 2 when in fact it was THICKER.

As you noted, it was just a prototype or mockup. Reporters were stupidly comparing that mockup with Samsung's verbal specs that their production tablet would be thinner. It's just more made-up drama to get readers.

EXCEPT Samsung told everyone they were CONSUMERS.

Yeah, and airline pilots would be lost without an iPhone to chastise ATC over weather delays.

kdarling. somehow i'm not convinced by your arguments.

Actually, that could be good. I'm for skepticism if it makes you do more in-depth research and be a bit wary of believing everything that people say, or relying solely on sites which live on advertising and click-throughs.

E.g. stuff like "Apple wins critical multi-touch patent!! Other phones doomed" and other such dramatic nonsense.

That's fine, no one is convinced by yours. You have failed to prove Samsung lied in anyway.

We can list a few times Steve Jobs lied though if you want... ;)

I wasn't trying to convince you or kdarling.

everybody knows Samsung lied. :)

I did.

what I was trying to say was that their smartphone business is not that profitable if a HUGE 500+% jump in market share can't offset weaknesses in their LCD and semiconductor business.

Actually no, you didn't read the article, and no, that's not what you were trying to say.

If that's what you were actually trying to say, then your fingers must have deceived you when you were writing that previous post.

Compare that to Apple lies and it is chump change.

Apple is among the biggest liars.

Liars who make products like they do are due a pass now and then. It really depends what the lie is about, but when I'm enjoying my iPad and looking at what the sad alternatives are, Apple's "lies" tend to not enter the picture.

Seems to me you have 4 people in this thread who don't quite "know" this little tidbit, so you can't go around claiming "Everybody" now can you ? ;)

in all fairness, you did say "no one is convinced by yours"...not saying i agree with him, but you made some sweeping broad assumptions too...
