That's exactly what I'm saying. We forget that it wasn't so long ago, only a few years back, when we had displays that were actually much smaller than the outer Fold displays as the norm. But, as you say, even today many phones are about the same width or even smaller.

The thing is, the Fold series had to take usability into the equation. If the outer screen were as large as say a pro max iPhone, then when opened it would be huge and difficult to hold with one hand (yes I do that on occasion if I don't need to navigate much), or even 2 hands as it would be that much heavier as well as wider. I'm curious to actually hold and use the Mate 2 as it is wider and they have that narrowing design to accommodate for the weight distribution, but at the end of the day I suspect it's still heavier and side heavy when used unfolded.
A good indication on handling and ergonomics would be to look at typical Kindle devices they are highly engineered for balance between screen size and comfort etc

Totally get that. My point though is that this phone has the exact same camera technology of a $700 phone, but costs $1,100 more. That’s a tough pill to swallow. I’m sure it does cost more to make. Hopefully future costs will decrease and Folds will drop in price but also be able to maintain top of line cameras.
The trouble is we can apply this wishful thinking and random price reductions to many phones

eg Should an Iphone be $400 or $600 cheaper because it lacks top tier spec's in some areas yet the same as other cheaper phones,

You simply can't get the best of the best in all areas on any top tier phone without further increasing current prices

Applying a random price reduction makes little sense without considering the device as whole, sure personal preference may make you choose another device but not by placing a price reduction factor on one and not another and so on.

Anyone who ordered the fold 3 and or the watch still say preparing to ship?
My Watch 4 44mm is supposed to deliver this Thursday according to Samsung. Fold 3 not until Sept. 17. But I’m not planning on keeping that. Just want to use the 21 day trial and check it out. I don’t think I can live with the camera set-up and the battery life with the 4400 mAh capacity.

Mine just reached my city of destination for 25th delivery. However this notice is worrying me..

“Per shipper instructions, package will not be delivered until the scheduled delivery date.”

So it might be held until the 27th? I hope not.

Mine was picked up Monday in Texas and hasn't moved since. Still says Thursday as the delivered date. I swear if FedEx lost another one of my packages I'm gonna lose it.

21 days? Is that with Samsung ?

That's not what I'm worries about. I'm worries about FedEx losing packages like they do all the time.

Side note, I got an email from Samsung saying the package shipped and will be delivered today. However FedEx tracking still shows it being picked up on Monday in Texas with no movement since then.

I was in the same boat with my iPad Pro… I was worried about my package being lost. My package was being delivered by some courier (Lone Star Overnight) I never even heard of it. And on top of that, looking at Google reviews or reddit threads… that didn’t reduce my nerves one bit.

No one can really tell you to relax or anything… because anything can happen. In my situation, the iPad Pro said it was to be delivered and then suddenly unbeknownst to me it was requested to be picked up. I contacted them to get some information, but they told me it was available at courier. And when I drove there… they initially had trouble finding it.

So, it’s understandable to be concern until it officially arrives in your hands.

Finally got tracking info. States delivery today. I'll expect it to arrive tomorrow, doubt it'll delivered today.

I love love Flossy. But I disagree with comparing the Fold 3 to other non-folding phones. There just isn't anything to comparing it to. He compares battery and camera on the Fold 3 to other non folding phones for what he says was half the price. True the battery is not the same size..but then they can't do the things the fold can do as well...like well fold :).
There are trade offs with folding phones to make the form factor useable. If it had a 5000 mAh battery and was thicker then people would complain it was too thick. If it had the same camera bump as the S21 Ultra then people would complain it wobbled and was too thick.

It looks like the Fold 3 is refined over last years model. I think folding phones are the future. They are not for me right now but soon.

Yeah Samsung is telling me today but FedEx still shows no movement since it was picked up from Samsung and still tells me delivery tomorrow. So who knows.

It's just a tough argument all around. I totally agree with Floss because I'm that guy that doesn't even know if I really want a foldable but I'm interested in the tech. But downgrading cameras from my current setup just isn't in line of what I want in a phone, so I really do think he raises a good point. But yeah, damned if you do, damned if you don't.

Im in the same boat. I wouldnt have jumped on the pre-order if I didnt find the loophole in the Foldable Ecosystem bundle. I feel like I'll either love this phone or feel pretty meh after a few days. If its the former, I'll keep it. If it's the latter (like I felt with the Fold 2), then it'll go back and I'll pickup the Pixel 6 Pro when it drops.

Have any of you tested one yet? I got my hands on the Fold 3 and Flip 3 at Best Buy last week (they usually have the new Samsung devices in display before they release) and the Fold 3 is almost identical to the Fold 2.

- Inner display is brighter and better than Fold 2
- Outer display 120Hz is nice but comes at the expense of battery
- Under display camera on the inner display grossed me out. Content displayed over it is really super pixelated and I'm not sure it's even worth having. I guess individual users will decide. Plus the pics and videos it takes are compromised.
- Form factor is visually identical to the Fold 2 except I do think they ever-so-slightly reduced the gap when the phone is closed right next to the hinge
- The hinge protrudes out less but it's barely noticeable
- I forgot to try the speaker but I'm sure it's equally as good if not better.
- I didn't try S-Pen as the phone doesn't come with one
- Hinge feel is slightly improved and more solid and snaps better.
- I miss the custom hinge colors and the standard color combos of the device are a lot more boring in comparison.

That's about it!

Yeah, TechTablets YT guy did a great comparison. There are only two reason to upgrade... one is if your @Awesomesince86 whom received alotta incentives to upgrade. And the other reason if you value having the S-Pen. He mention that Samsung shouldn't have called it the Fold 3, but perhaps Fold 2 "S" or something. Because the only benefit to upgrade is the S-Pen.

Yeah it’s a tough one if the camera was Samsung’s best I would likely still have my fold 2. I would love to have the fold for my 2nd phone but it’s just hard to justify for 1800

I'll be ready for a fold maybe by the Fold5!
