These were nothing but a bunch of amatures, or employees from some goofy company who was paid to do this. Because they could never afford to do such thing by themselves (if so, then they are awesomley stupid). And why waste money like that in first place for a silly thing like this btw? But it's quite fun that media did a big deal out of this little show and made it spread globaly faster than lighter fluid. :)

Which makes it even more bizarre.

Or maybe not . . .

Sydney Morning Herald is also claiming it's RIM.

How hilarious. Yeah, that's a GREAT way to get people interested in RIM, insult the customers!

Honestly, apart from people interested in technology, who the hell in the general public has even HEARD of Research In Motion?

Who hasn't? Seriously, if you've never heard of a Blackberry, chances are you live in a cave.

Dissecting the incident, I'm 50/50 as to whether it was a good move or not.

On the one hand you have people talking about it, I wouldn't say its gone viral, but its definitely made some waves. There are a lot of people with anti-Apple sentiment for whatever reason, so they'll lap this up and get wood for the company that was behind it and it may even translate in to sales for said product (that was until I heard it was by RIM, who buys Blackberrys these days haha).

On the other hand, you have the Apple fans. They will see this as an attack aimed at them, much like the Samsung ads recently, and will react negatively for being pigeon holed as a stereotype that they feel doesn't apply to them. The negative reaction will result in bad mouthing the company, people looking for advice on a product be it RIM or Samsung, if its coming from said Apple fan, expect it to get panned and something else get recommended instead.

We all do it, we all have friends, family members, work colleagues who will ask you for advice on a product and you will sway one way or another, depending on what you think is suited for them, what will work for them, what you think is actually a good product and also fits their budget range.

So, like I said, 50/50.

Personally, I love a bit of anarchy, just thought the move left too many questions for the layman and you have to be trawling through the geeksheets to find out who was actually behind it.

It was RIM then. See, I feel hatred towards Samsung but RIM I just feel sad.

RIM's downfall is almost has bad as THFC 2nd half of the season. :D :(

Wouldn't say its that bad. Spurs have been the personification of capitulation. Although I did enjoy winding up all the Arsenal fans about them being in their rightful place until you guys blew it, DOH!

Or you're the average Joe Consumer who buys an Iphone or an Android phone without being able to name the operating system it's running on.

While almost everyone on this forum and into tech in any way will know what a Blackberry is, I think you hugely overestimate how educated the average smartphone buyer is in regards to technology. I could name at least a dozen people at work who have either an iphone or Android smartphone who wouldn't know what the hell a Blackberry is, let alone be able to tell me who designed it.

Blackberries were very much business devices that started gaining consumer attention. iOS/Android were/are consumer Operating Systems that are starting to gain business attention. Big difference.

I don't know about where you live, but where I've lived Blackberrys are still acceptable phones to own. People love the BBM thing and don't really know about iMessage at all.

Australia. Perhaps Blackberries took off far more in the US and UK than it ever did here? I honestly can't say as I have ever seen someone in public rocking a Blackberry.

Which is why I find this ad campaign by RIM in Sydney so strange...wouldn't it best be aimed at markets where the Blackberry is at least a device people remember owning or knowing people who owned them?

Yeah, but everyone has heard of a BlackBerry. I don't think I know anyone who doesn't know what a BlackBerry is.

At least Samsung's advertising is somewhat interesting, unlike the "Bold Team" (is that for real?) linked above.
