As long as when the power cord is not connected, the display fades a little for power saving this makes working on batteries not really important. Personally i dont want to work on batteries only for this reason! I prefer to work under the maximoum brightness of my laptop display.

Of course i dont know if this brightness reduction, for power consumption can be disabled with loss of power of course!

There is a default setting for battery power that includes a lower screen brightness. You should be able to either customize that profile in System Preferences to keep the brightness at full (if that's what you're looking for) or you can manually hit your brightness key to bring it back up.

In contrast to the Gateway laptops my University provides for students. When unplugged, they dim, and cannot be turned to maximum brightness unless plugged in.

So only the MBPros can turn to max brightness when power cord is out when other laptops cant!

Did you have a question or did you just want to chat? :apple:
wanted to chat about my question :D

All Apple laptops put out any time recently can. At least, I know all the Aluminum PBs and all the iBook G4s can. The Macbook can.

This thread is surreal. God forbid that anyone who buys a notebook computer would actually care about how long the battery lasts, just because you don't want to work off battery. Perhaps they should just stop providing a battery altogether? ;)

Well in that case, im wrong so longer battery life is important if the display doesnt dim at least for Apple laptops! :D

Well in my case, i have a Compaq Evo laptop and ive never used the battery. Not only because i dont like to work when display is dimmed, but there hadnt been any place without electricity that ive visited!
Now about not providing a battery, well ok lets not get too absolute on this. Ok the battery might be needed at very special times, but u can live without it, thats what i believe!

What do u mean surreal?

If you commute on a train. Battery.
If you fly on a plane. Battery.
Out on the back deck/patio. Battery.
Sitting on the outside deck of a ferry on a sunny day. Battery.

You might be able to live without one but most laptop buyers probably couldn't.

Umm, battery life is important, I care. You can choose to have the screen not dim, a very easy setting. What's the point of a laptop if you never use a battery? Get a shuttle PC, and carry around an LCD. There you go..

Not good enough examples id say...
On trains im not sure but there must be power leads, perhaps not in all seats!
On Planes u can use the MagSafe Airline Adapter.
On the ferry u wont want to work outside, especially on a sunny day, its like u will be using a dimmed display, i think worse!
Whats a back deck/patio?
I think im the most common laptop user and only a few buyers wont be able to live wiithout batteries.

I definitely love the longer battery on new MBP. It allows me to do many things that wasn't possible before.

Chatting or gaming through wifi in a long boring lecture
Doing homework in the library
Watching a movie on a train

My old laptop can last less than one hour, so basically, i have to carry cable around which sucks.

well ok, but i created this thread for the case that you couldnt get the display dimmed! ok i agree battery is important but i can live without it!

If most buyers think battery is optional, why not they return the battery to Apple and get a refund. Or, sell it to me, as long as it's new.

I know the new one is around $150 so you can save quite a lot of money for that!:D

I think its important only if the display doesnt dim. I prefer to put in a power cord and work with rather than not and with a dimmed display.
Thats me, sober! :D

I first read the title as "SantaRosa no longer powers MBPros? who cares!" and thought to myself, that's strange. Apple have dropped it already? But now that I've read it properly, it's even more "surreal" and by that I mean, stupid.

Doing work from customer sites, where it's not always feasible to plug in. And driving from site to site, where plugging in isn't even possible.

While it is true that I have seen many people who buy a laptop just to use it as a small desktop computer; there are those of us that use the battery all the time. I bought a 12" PowerBook G4 in 2003, and have two batteries. Between the two batteries, they have a total of 500 charge/discharge cycles. I bought my 15" MacBook Pro the day it became available, (delivered in March 2006,) and my original battery had 50 charge/discharge cycles before I returned it under the warranty, and my two replacement batteries have a combined total of 180 charge/discharge cycles on them, in less than one year. (When I got the warranty replacement, I bought a second one at the same time.)

Just because *YOU* don't care about battery life doesn't mean that NOBODY cares about battery life. I, for one, would love to have an extra hour of life. I completely discharge one battery during the day at least 3 times a week, and sometimes completely discharge both batteries before I get an opportunity to plug it back in. Not "before I feel like" plugging it back in, but "before I get an opportunity" to plug it back in. I have had a few days in the past year that I really wish I had a third battery. (Since I could get 5.5-6 hours out of my old PowerBook when I really skimped, and I can only get 4.5-5 hours out of the MacBook Pro.)

So tell us where were u and u are in so need of the laptop batteries and discharged them so oftenly? Actually lets make a poll, on where is the favorite/most common place to use laptops, on the porch, on your back yard, on the ferry(in/out), on the plane(in/out hahahaha), in the lake with your padle boat, or lets say on the Grand Canyon at its highest peak or at the Himalayas for that matter. Aaaaaarh we are getting more and more spoiled everyday i recon. We dont live in a jungle u know. There are very little places where power is not available and why should i demand to have a second or third battery for the 2% of places that electricity is not available? Perhaps u need 2-3 i have no doubt, still id like to know their use cause you could very well be an exception or oustandingly spoiled! (sorry about that). So in general terms for the ones that need so mutch cordless power how should i call u guys... Cheeta? But then by the way id be Tarzan... and wheres Jane anyway to brighten up the area? :D
(theres no hostile atmoshpere on this ok? so dont i see any hard core replyes to this post, lets keep it plain and fun in here i urge you  )

Not everyone flies first class just to use their special airline MBP cord. I for one know I don't have power where I sit on my flights.

I'm sorry but your point is invalid and nobody cares to hear you rambling on trying to defend it. You may as well save your words.

I use my battery. If myself as a person am considered as valid as you, we are even. When you count all the people in this thread who said the battery matters, you are by FAR outnumbered. Sometimes I want to sit on my couch away from plugs. Sometimes I'm in class, a university classroom of 800 people, and there are no plugs near where my friends sit, why don't I just go in back and plug in huh?
