So, as usual, I'm getting an itchy trigger finger on these SSDs. Would love to give my Mac Pro a little Christmas tune-up. As of now, I have a few choices. Could someone please advise on each of these options and make sure I have my facts straight? :

MZ-KPV1T00/0A2 - Hold out hope for this legendary beast to resurface. Transfer speeds should be somewhere in the range of 1200 MB read and write. Hope to snag one for $750, but prepared to pay a pretty penny more.

1200 MB write and 1400 MB read: https://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?p=20248200#post20248200

Client NVMe SSDs are expected to appear starting in 2015, in a variety of form factors: http://www.demartek.com/Demartek_Comments_IDF2014_and_NVMe_Thunderbolt_2_USB_3_1.html

At all i can confirm this SSD is an awesome scratch disk. With Handbrake i can convert 1080p footage very fast. It's also the i/o of the scratch disk that counts, not only the CPU/GPU.

MZ-KPU1T0T/0A6 - A more common SSD. Speeds hover around 950 MB read and 850 MB write. Regularly goes for $750 on eBay.

MZ-KPU1T0T/0A2 - A slower option than the "0A6" (?), but it fetches the same price. Should I avoid this model? How much slower is it?

Are there any other SSD options that I should be looking at? Thanks again for everyone's hard work and expertise.

As long as you get an 1 TB SSD: The XP941 does 1100 MB/s reads, 900 MB/s writes while Apple 1 TB does 900 MB/s reads and 1,000 MB/s writes.

Merry Christmas!

Thanks so much for getting back to me. Your links were incredibly helpful.

So I'd be fine picking up a MZ-KPV1T00/0A2 - or if the price is right, an XP941. I will keep checking eBay in the hopes that a good deal comes up. Who knows, if I wait around long enough maybe those NVMe SSDs will start shipping…

Thanks again!

Don't forget, one advantage with the Apple SSD is native TRIM support. No hackery or other work arounds needed.

Yes, the MZ-KPV1T00/0A2 is a native Apple SSD. Apple firmware, and uses the Apple proprietary connector.

No, the XP941 is not a native Apple drive and has no native TRIM support:

The xp941 offers a wash in performance @ 512gb compared to the 2013 1tb option at 100 or so more. The 2014/2015 v series is the fastest blade style ssd available. Although a rare, fell off the truck, variety it offers a glimpse where the M.2 and apple offerings are headed.

I've been running a 1tb option for months and could t be happier not to have spent thousands for a smaller, less expandable box.

I have an OWC Accelsior E2 as my boot drive. Installing an XP941 as a secondary drive means installing and enabling Cindori TRIM Enabler globally. Will this affect the operation of the Accelsior and risk the non boot issues if I need to reset PRAM etc?

I couldn’t find the answer to this on the Cindori forums.

Thanks.

Don't buy the XP941 just yet. Samsung's SM951 is imminent and is about 50% faster at the same price. When it comes out the XP941 will become much cheaper.

You stick a SM951 in slot 2 and 3 and you will have a RAID with reads ups to 3000MB/s and writes about 2000MB/s. Or you can use one for OSX and the other for loading large amounts of data quickly, such as RAW image/video files, games, etc.

There is only one report of someone who bought one and was getting 1400mb/s reads and 1300mb/s writes on a single card.

This was the dealer who sold the only one so far...

Interesting stuff, thanks. I'll almost certainly hold out for a while on that basis.
Question will still be the same though, will using TRIM Enabler affect my OWC Accelsior boot drive in any way?

The Apple/Samsung drives would be my preference but are harder to get here in the UK with a warranty. Although they have OOTB TRIM support, they also have the additional expense of import duty.

Quite possibly we will see the SM951 used in the 7,1 so we should see Apple flashed versions with TRIM support become available on eBay.

Apple / Samsung versions of the SM951 with 3DVNand have already been showing up in 1TB V series engineering samples. Mass production should hopefully kick off soon, opening up availability on Ebay, etc. These SSD's are still to show up in shipping retail product.

Apple shifting to M.2? Probably not: Considering Apple's custom PCIe connector is used on every shipping OS X platform since late 2013.

For any interested UK subscribers to this thread who can't wait for the next gen version, here's the 512gb XP941 with the Bplus adapter included for £372.99 delivered and with a 2 year warranty. I can't find it cheaper anywhere else.

http://www.flexxmemory.co.uk/apple-mac-hard-drives-ssds/samsung-xp941-512gb-m-2-ngff-pcie-solid-state-drive-ssd-2280-mzhpu512hcgl-00000-for-2006-to-2012-apple-mac-pro-tower-including-adapter/

If the 951 is available in 4 months time at the same price with warranty etc as all the info suggests, then that'll be a sweet deal.

Just bought a MZ-KPU1T0T/0A6 to replace my XP941 already. Worried about the lack of trim with the XP941. I would have waited for the SM951 but it'll be same with regards to trim :(. Seems that Apple have made it a bit harder to use Trim Enabler in Yosemite (as per usual) so the native trim will be nice. It's not the mega quick 1TB but it'll do for the price I got it for!

Does anyone have the partnumber of the Mac Pro 256 SSD? I want to replace my xp941 to get Trim.

How fast is this Apple SSD?

I hear you, I just personally feel pretty uncomfortable having no warranty on a several hundred £ SSD.
Also, can you not run Trim Enabler from Cindori?

I used to use it but it appears Apple have made a change to kext signing in Yosemite and using Trim Enabler can now mean the system could fail to boot.

Yes, and all third party suppliers are affected, including high priced premium products like the LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 and the OWC and Sonnet products. On the long run, this is a strong argument against Apple Computers…. This is REALY stupid from Apple, shooting oneself in the foot.
Why should i buy an expensive Thunderbolt-attached SSD drive if the function ability is ruined? This way, Thunderbolt is dead on the long run.

Wow, that is incredibly bad but seems very much like a mistake to me which hopefully means that they'll fix it and in doing so, undo the kext signing.

I don't believe it's a mistake, Apple excludes third party SSD's TRIM support since OS X Snow Leopard, but up to Mavericks there was no problem to manually enable TRIM.

Undoing kext signing in Yosemite would not be necessary, if they would enable TRIM for all drives that support TRIM, like Windows does for some time.

I don't believe Upgrader meant mistake in way you are taking it to mean. I believe Upgrader meant it's a terribly bad decision. And, this I agree with whole heartily. This is truly a mistake or bad decision on so many levels, it really boggles my mind.

Thanks Lou. Yes, I meant I view it as a mistake on their part to make such an incredibly bad decision, as opposed to making a mistake because they don't know what they're doing. Cheers.

I'm about to buy a Samsung XP941 256GB. Could you recommend it or is the future lack of TRIM support (Yosemite) a bigger problem?

^^^^The Use TRIM Enabler to enable trim on Yosemite has not proved to be an issue for me. As long as you remember to turn it off when doing tasks that manage or change the OS. OS Updates, PRAM resets, and etc.
