For new iPad customers, the $25 per month 2 GB plan will replace the existing $29.99 unlimited plan. iPad customers will continue to pre-pay for their wireless data plan and no contract is required. Existing iPad customers who have the $29.99 per month unlimited plan can keep that plan or switch to the new $25 per month plan with 2 GB of data.

as long as you keep the autorenew up you can keep the unlimited. Pretty pissed about this, the unlimited plan any time I need it was why I spent the extra 130 bucks.

What's to stop them from ending it at any monthly cycle?, autorenew?

They will end it as soon as possible, you can be sure of it. It makes no sense otherwise, and they have just proven their utter lack of good-faith.

But the whole thing is moot now. The 2gb deal isn't the end of the world, and perhaps this new pricing will improve the network which is presently terrible for voice.

It's not moot at all. It's a breach of trust that will linger in many people's minds for some time to come. If they revised a year from now, OK, but 5 weeks after the 3G launched! That was one of the main selling points of the 3G.

I was not an ATT hater until today. Now I don't even know if I'll upgrade to the iPhone 4 in November b/c I'm not sure I want to do business with it. I don't think I'm atypical here.

I feel like I'm in the minority here but i don't ever use 2GB of data on my iPhone or iPad. So now I get to save $10 a month.

Knowing how much His Steveness likes a good press fight (a la Adobe/Google), I wonder how long before we see a shot fired from Apple across AT&T's proverbial bow?

I am with you. I was never an AT&T hater. Then in the last 6 months the following has happened:

1. network downtown has gotten so bad that I only get edge speeds on my 3G service. I mean consistently... I NEVER get 3G speeds anymore.
2. They pull this crap with the ipad
3. My network performance has dropped all over the place (not to the point of the downtown Birmingham area yet, but they are getting there).

I will go Verizon in the fall, regardless of whether they have an iphone or not. AT&T is killing the Apple experience for me on the iphone.

I had to re-fill my 250mb plan after about 20 days. I don't see myself ever needing more than the 2 gigs offered on the new plan, but the fact that I no longer have that as an option pisses me off.

Also, I don't think getting the iPad replaced, or having the battery upgraded would be a problem, since you can just remove the sim and put it into the replacement you get.

Personally....

....I'll be very surprised if any Verizon, Tmobile, Sprint, whatever plan is substantially different from what AT&T is offering now.

Well, the only comparison you really have between the iPad and hardware w/data service offerings from Verizon, Tmobile, etc. are their netbook offerings. Both Verizon and Tmobile also offer prepaid services as well.

But compared to their netbook w/bundled service offerings:

Tmobile: Dell Mini Netbook w/3G service
$39.99/mo 5G cap
$24.99/mo 200 meg cap

Verizon: HP Mini netbook (several other models avail) w/EVDO service
$59.99/mo 5G cap
$39.99/mo 250 meg cap
-or- prepaid broadband
$50/mo 1G cap
$30/mo 300 meg cap
$15/mo 100 meg cap

Short version....AT&T is priced pretty competitively with their new model.

I can see it. Remember the 3G network signup errors around the time of the 3G iPad launch?

I can see some "technical issue" causing the auto-renew to throw out an error for a day or two which will cause the subscription to lapse.

Still, I'm on the fence. My 1st month usage is right at 2GB or so. I had two trips and the shiny new toy factor to drive up usage during that time. It's quite likely my average usage will have me save some money with the new plans.

What does irritate me is the sudden ending of the announced plans on such short notice. If AT&T let a year or so go by before putting their foot down on iPad owners it would be a tad more understandable. Instead, they are just pissing on Apple.

So, the timing of this is interesting in regards to the WWDC and Apple's upcoming iPhone launch. It really makes me wonder if there are any surprises other than new phone hardware that would irritate AT&T.

Ok, I just put on my conspiracy cap (working fine BTW) :D

Didn't i read that this iPad $30 deal with ATT was the result of some kind of guarantee that they would keep exclusivity with the iPhone and was contingent upon this. Then we see all this Verizon talk, an now the ATT price shake up

coincidence?

This is definitely AT&T throwing some serious poo on SJ's face...

We are still basically in the middle of the iPad launch here in the states (lead times up to 7-10 days) and AT&T suddenly decides to change one of the primary selling points of the iPad 3G? Yikes!

I can't wait for next week's keynote :D

Sucks to hear for you guys in the US. ATT really messed up here.

I plan to activate 3G on June 14th in Canada. Really hope Rogers doesn't cut the 5GB limit down to 2GB when I get back. UGH, that would really piss me off.

Yes, actually this is all kind of amusing. It almost looks personal, and there are a whole lot of players that are at each others throats these days.

Slings and arrows.

You know, apple already has the government in their face, i'm wondering how much they will now add this to the list.

They can't be excited about this at all.... Although they had to have known ahead of time. Maybe. Has the ATT relationship gone bad enough they didn't tell them?

I think there will be more to read the next few days on the topic, and at the keynote....

I'm like a small number of others on here who use less than 2 gigs per month. In the first month of use I have used less than 1 gig. The new plan could save me $10.00 per month.

Most people could do the same - just watch what tou do with your iPad.

As has also been noted here, no long term contract exists. Read the fine print. AT&T can do as they wish.

Well it should cut down on the wait times for 3G models considerably!

I knew I should have kept my wifi iPad -- tethering would have suited me just fine!

This is COMPLETE BS....

I to had no issues with AT&T but now this is just the reason i need to leave and get myself a 4G EVO...Screw AT&T...and as for my iPad ( that i have not yet activated 3G service on yet ) is going back to apple or being sold on Craigs today...

because even though it is PRE-PAID DATA, in all reality its not...because if you shut it off for a month or 2 then your going to be downgraded to the 2GB package i bet...SO they WANT you to keep auto renewal ON, so its pretty much like your in a contract if you think about it...Though you can leave anytime but if you do, you wont get unlimited data anymore...

Complete BS...

Before you knee jerk your iPad 3g's back to the store for a wifi, don't forget the other benefits, find my iPad, agps, having an emergency backup if you need it where there is no wifi etc.. Also, remember, it won't be AT&T forever either.

I'm with you all the way. I've never had a problem with AT&T until now. I had put off buying the iPad until the 3G version. Was going to ask for it for Father's Day. Well, thats blown out of the water because I will not be able to get one before the 7th. I will now go back to my original thought, that is, get the WiFi version and save the $130.00. If I really, really need 3G I'll use my iPhone. Fortunately there are many WiFi hotspots around here.

I wonder what would happen if everyone who bought a 3G version sent it back, hmmm.

Belive it or not, AT&T is probably HAPPY to see the reaction from the vocal minority that makes up 2% of it's customers but probably 30% of it's data usage. They know that 98% of their customers will be glad to see that they will save money with the new data plans based on their regular usage pattern and they will not longer have to deal with bitchy customers who want to tether and/or stream 30GB of data a month over their network.

This isn't like a pharmacy or something where if you lose your highest utilizers you lose revenue - they will probably be making money by getting some people to go elsewhere.
