Was thinking about Montevina too, but looked through what Montevina has to offer and I wasn't particularly impressed. Most of the promised stuff are immaterial to me so I'll settle for a Penryn with the alleged increase in battery life being the biggest attraction. I don't have time to wait for Nehalem.

What's the features of Montevina? Thanks

What's the features of Montevina? Thanks

- reduced power usage (34W to 29W)
- new SSE instructions
- better chipset (relating to integrated graphics)
- RAM support for DDR3-800, which is techically more power-efficient than DDR2-800
- Intel Turbo Memory
- LAN controller
- Wireless modules (WIMAX)

Integrated graphics and LAN controller are useless to me. WIMAX is nonexistent where I live and will take time to develop (802.11g is still standard where I live, and connections aren't even stable, forcing me to use HSPDA instead). SSE is too remote to me. As for DDR3-800 RAM, local reviews have pit DDR2 against DDR3. The verdict is that DDR3 cannot beat DDR2 decisively yet since DDR2 is mature technology.

That leaves the reduced power usage and Turbo RAM. Anyway, taking everything into consideration, Montevina is a poor prize to me for having to wait for several more months, not to mention that a new redesign of MBP is needed by then to accommodate the new platform... and then the Rev A issues.

I'm happy just waiting for a week or two for Penryn's proven lower power consumption which translates into better battery life and less heat. That's more important for me.

Thanks :) I'm now happy with the thought of buying as soon as Penryn make it to the MBP :D I'm excited again hehe

The wisest choice would be to wait for 5-7 years. They will definitely have changed the style by then, and the laptops will be way faster.

In the mean time, I suggest a calculator and a pad of paper. Lighter and cheaper than the MacBook Air!

Perfect ... cannot top that sage advice. It is both credit card friendly while helping those in hot pursuit of the latest and greatest model deal with the dreaded prospect of making a decision that likely would generate untold anguish.

Wow these threads are becoming more and more pathetic. It's kinda like a bad car wreck that you don't want to look at but just can't help yourself.

Keep waiting. Forever. Like the cattle.

Nobody wants to shell out thousands of dollars on a product that gets updated soon after, and I'll admittedly be aggravated that I didn't wait another month if it gets updated by then. However, I dig everything about my purchase and I see it doing everything necessary for the next few years.

Just my two cents.

dude the problem is, you can never have the latest thing, ok let's say Apple do refresh the MBP, and you bought it, but then in the mid of 2008 you will see another new product

what ya gonna do? this is technology brother

every product gets updated soon after, even how new it is, welcome to the tech world mate :)

Buy now. Don't wait even ten minutes for an update. No one knows anything about timing or details. People just keep dragging along because "they" say an update to Penryn or Montevina or Walter is coming. No proof, no guarantee. And I'm confused about the problem with the MBPs mechanical latches. They work very well and they're smooth as butter. Can someone explain why a ton of people seem to be hoping for a magnetic latch?

I don't give a crap about some Multi-Touch fancy pad stuff. I will be using their keyboard and a separate mouse. The only good feature is the "Pinch" feature.. who cares about the swipe and other useless lazy way to view touch stuff for photos.

Newer hardware six months down the road? No problem, couldn't care less. Newer hardware 6 weeks down the road, for something costing me 2500$? Yeah that would be pretty freaking soul crushing. So I am going to wait a little longer, my iPhone does most of the work I used to do on my late MacBook anyway so I can do without a laptop for a while longer.

I agree kamiboy. This is not about having the latest and greatest, it's about spending a hell of a lot of money for it to be replaced within a short period of time. If I wait til the MBP is updated, I'll buy and I'll be happy. If they then refresh it 3 or 6 months later, I couldn't give a monkeys. If I have the money when they bring out Montevina, I'll buy again and keep my other as a stand by.

I'm going to college next year and want to get the next mbp update, but I don't know if i should wait til summer and see if quad-core gets moved to the mbp's.

I don't think the MBP will be getting a case redesign soon.
Agreed with this, as the MBA adopted the aluminum casing itself. In regard to appearance, I'm guessing it might get the MB/MBA keyboard, but somehow I doubt it. Darker keys on the same keyboard would be more likely.

It's really not all about the current MultiTouch features, it's about having the standard which new software updates can add "new moves" to.

Thanks for expressing how I feel as well.

I am DONE with these "I'm Waiting Threads."

They are pointless.

I don't really think this is a "Ton" of people, just a vocal several dozen and then others that repeat what they read.

I have three MBP's and the latches are excellent.

Yah, except Penryn is nothing at ALL to get worked up over, and certainly not anything to let "crush your soul."

In fact, the smaller die size and supposed pre-release problems could lead to some really nice problems . . .

how do we know about updates?

After waiting to replace my old G4 12" for a while I am one of the ones left disappointed with the MBA. Nice design - not for me. People in this thread have talked about chances of a "silent update" of the MB Pro's in coming weeks. Is this just wishful thinking or based on anything more? I would hate to buy a 15" today and see something better out in a few days/weeks. Any thoughts?

look 2500$ is nothing to scoff at and while penryn might just offer a 5-10% difference in speed it still equals the difference between the 2.2 and 2.4 MBP models. That plus the potential for a cooler running processor that will result in less hyperactive fan activity makes it more than worth being disappointed in having shelled out that much money for something that could have been that much better.

And when all signs point at a upgrade at a unspecified near future then I just cannot get myself to take the leap. Not when I know how much i'll be kicking myself if a silent update takes place 2-3 weeks later

I'm going to buy the next one then burn Apple to the ground so they can't update again and reduce the value of my machine.

I bit a both actually. There havs been some small talk rumors about a update shortly, but we don't know when. Most of us seems to hold of a couple of more weeks "just in case". Like many others have said, if you need one now, get it, otherwise wait a few more weeks.

Dear Lord, buy it now if you need it, buy the next one if you want it.
Whatever you do, don't wait any longer than the next revision or you'll just become obsessive like I have.
