I tried it for about a day and gave up. The letters were just slightly too small.

1440x900 sounded like a good compromise between the two for me, but I couldn't get it to work, at least without an app.

You couldn't get 1440x900 to work? That is supported in the display preference pane.

Exactly. Can you explain yourself there, Dayv? Did 1440x900 disappear for you somehow when you added 1680x1050? Because it shouldn't have.

I added the strings for both, and only 1680x1050 was added to the preferences pane. I have a slightly different display model number (and thus was editing a different file) from the ones mentioned here, but I was surprised when one worked and the other didn't. I also tried adding one string or the other instead of both, and the 1440x900 string caused no change on its own, either.

I may try again later to get 1440x900 working, as I really think that will be the right resolution for me.

Ugh, this is what I get for posting this when the rMB isn't right in front of me.

1440x900 is what I'm using now, there was a resolution between this and 1680x1050 that I unsuccessfully tried to make work.

edit: 1536x960, that was it. Sorry for the confusion.

And you never use anything else? Does it ever bother you?

It's the only resolution I use. Otherwise everything looks too chunky for me.

You need to download the Retina Display Menu (RDM) for 1536x960 to be a selectable option - only 1680x1050 is available from the system display preferences (hope that makes sense).

I wonder why you must download RDM. I don't like the idea of adding an extra app to my computer

Pretty sure you don't. People have been successful with it without an app.

it's nice that between public beta versions of 10.10.4, don't have to change this file :D

I can confirm that 1536* is only selectable using RDM (though you can open the app, choose the res, then close it and never open it again; which is what I've done). 1680* replaces the last res in system preferences, so you don't need to download RDM for that.

For me; 1536* is perfect for the MacBook, still nice and sharp and a good amount of extra real estate without being too small or straining on the (my) eyes.

Second that. You nicely summarised this thread :D

It seems there have been two different answers to using 1536x960 resolution. Some say you must have RDM application, and some say they got it to work without. I got 1680x1050 to work without RDM but cannot get 1536x960 to work. I have tried adding the code for 1536x960 alone in the file, and also with the 1680x1050 code, neither worked to bring up the 1536x960 resolution. Anybody able to achieve this?

I'm there too. I've not installed RDM and I can not get the 1536x960 to work. I have no idea what I'm doing wrong. I'm giving up and am going to try to live with 1680x1050 (which does work) unless someone else has some things for me to check.

I went ahead and just downloaded RDM, and was able to do it. Would rather not have to use another application, but 1536x960 was my sweet spot, so will just use it unless somebody has the solution.

so i actually haven't tried 1536x960 i kind of want to now though since all the chatter, and there being middle ground wiggle room between 1440x900 and 1680x1050 imo.

Downloaded Retina Display from mac app store, didn't see it as an option. How did you guys get this one going?

I've only been using the modded 1680 "natively" from system pref thus far

I think you still have to add it to the plist file as described and then should be able to see it in the app. Apparently that particular resolution doesn't show up in settings even if you update the plist file correctly as instructed in this thread.

This is exactly what I attempted, and it didn't work. I wonder if this is only supported for a subset of display builds...
Have you tried the RDM app? You're in a good position to further confirm the need for the app to get 1536x960.

What exactly is the RDM app's name? I am not sure how to know what to search for. I don't see what I would expect when I search for RDM.

I'm sorry but that just brings up comments. Is the app in the App Store?

It is not in the App Store. It's a small program written and shared by a generous programmer. S/he did not intend to pay for the distribution fees thru app stores.
There is a Dropbox download link somewhere there. I got mine from there as well.

Well, I can get to the reddit site but am having trouble finding where I can download the app.
