"I'm just so scared".....

Here's an idea, why don't we all form a Victim Support Group to help us through the obvious trauma of buying an iMac. OR.....here's another idea just buy it, enjoy it, if it's faulty send it back. Come on, there are more things in life to stress us out than buying a computer and I have always found Apple's after sales customer care absolutely spot on.

Words to live by…

Not that they will be heeded, of course. ;)

OP. Go forth and multiply Apple, Inc.'s cashflow!
Odds are you'll get a problem free *gasp* iMac and you will be able to sleep.
If not, then you go and return it. Rinse, repeat…

You should be, because it's garbage. I'm about to return my second Imac and I live 2 hours from the closest store. I'm not sure I want another one.

Sorry to hear about your bad machines but I assure you, the 27" iMac is not garbage. :p I've had Mac problems of my own before though (none so far with my i7 - knock on wood), so I can certainly sympathize with your frustration.

Incidentally, I live 3 hours from the closest Apple Store. Luckily, that's why Apple Japan sends a courier to my door with packing materials to pick up the machine and rush it back any time I have the slightest problem with it.

If Apple wherever you live doesn't offer this as an option as well I think that's a real shame.

Yeah, I was the same way, exactly the same actually.
Seriously though, it's not as big of a deal as you think. You can go ahead and order one right now. And lately, not as many have been showing up with yellow tinge, or flickering. Mine doesn't have any yellow tinge or flickering, so there you go :)

It's almost 3am here and the reason I'm not in bed yet is that I have been busy with my i7 replacement that arrived Wednesday and have now been using it for around nine hours.
There is NOTHING wrong with it. I can't say it will be fine next week or next month, but right now it is fault-free. No yellow, no noise, no flickers, and the screen looks dynamic and luscious. If it stays this way, it is leaps and bounds better than any Mac I've had, and I've owned quite a few over the years, as well as using a Mac Pro at work not so long ago.
I'm definitely pleased I have it.

I'm glad to hear it! Welcome to the Satisfied i7 Owners Club. Our membership is growing daily.

What week?

Ok, not having a technical background, that does sound plausible.. However could they not catch that in the design phase? The little movie they show they are so proud of the design of this machine, but obviously somebody missed something... Interesting that my yellow tinge is down the center from top to bottom while most is on the bottom.. Wonder if the 2tb drives (which I have) cause more heat (the drive is in the middle) and that is why I have had two 2tb drive iMacs with yellow tinge down the center of the screen? hmm...
Just my $.02, but there probably wasn't much thought - the newest iMac are essentially an evolutionary update of the previous models, just with bigger screen and LED backlights - and quad-core in the upper 27". And indeed the issue is showing up because the LED backlight is brighter and causes the effect of the heat on the panels to be more visible. LED-backlit IPS panels in All-in-One machines is a relatively new thing. It's no secret that heat causes changes to LCDs. The intel C2D chips produce a lot of heat, but the quad-cores generate a LOT more heat. I'll remain convinced this is a thermal issue until someone proves otherwise.

Interesting.. What is a bit scary about your theory is that if it is true than for those with the issue it will not simply be a swap of an LED panel.. It looks like it would require some type of insulation which may lead more to a redesign versus a panel swap...

Still An Apple Fan but I'm Getting a Little Discouraged

First of all I want to say that I would never want to go back to a PC and I love a few Apple products not just Macs.

But after saying that I will also add that I'm getting discouraged as of late.

My iPhone 3GS bricked after an update and I had to get it replaced and just two days ago I bought a 27" 3.06 Intel Core 2 Duo iMac and now the screen flickers on and off and then when it's on bars flicker throughout the screen.

I'm guessing greater demand has led to shoddier manufacturing. I hope this trend doesn't continue but I fear it will.

I got my 27" i7 a few days before Thanksgiving and I have not had any problems and if there is any yellowing its hardly noticeble in the bottom right corner.

I was just at the Apple store on Tuesday exchanging a Mini DisplayPort adapter and the guy that was helping me said they have only had one i7 come in for replacement.

If you do a google search for "flickering 27 inch iMac" you'll soon see that it's a fairly wide spread problem.

I'm taking my back for replacement today and the sales associate I spoke with said they had some customers that have brought back multiple iMacs before they got one that didn't have the flicker issue.

I'm contemplating just dropping down to the 21.5" model so I won't have to make any more 45 minute round-trip exchanges.

I think it would be interesting to do a poll of some sort to see which 27" chipset model has more issues, the Core2Duo, i5 or i7's.

I respect your intelligent analysis. However, my 27-inch was 3/4 yellow 15 seconds after it turned on, in the setup assistant. I really doubt the heat had gotten to it in under a minute. Furthermore, unless your video crunching, these processors seem to run fairly cool.

I just don't see how the heat could have ruined my display in a few seconds.

I may have been slightly impaired when I wrote that last night at 3 (screw alabama). They aren't garbage. I'm just very frustrated. I called apple care, and they gave two options: replacement or repair. The repair would consist of a new cable to attach the display to the computer and a new display. I list them in that order, because that was the order she told me, and I found it odd. I chose the replacement, so they're shipping me one fresh off the line from china. I also used the opportunity to upgrade the ram a bit. Hopefully the issues have been corrected in new models. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Well, for what it's worth, I've decided to wait for the next generation.

I'm not going to drop nearly 3 grand on a computer and then deal w/all these issues.

I'm pretty sure it comes to like $2200 if you dont add memory

I'm in the "buy it if you need/want it" camp. Apple has never failed to take care of any issues I've had in the past 15 years with their products, and after a couple of swap outs on my i5 I am just going to hang on to this one until they figure out the issue. I don't use this machine for photo editing or professional use so the yellow at the bottom in daily use, while I notice it, doesn't keep me from doing what I want. I don't have OCD to the point I can't function with it and realize Apple will eventually fix this machine to my satisfaction.

I have watch movies and played a couple games and unless I have a white or light grey background it's impossible to see the yellow tint. I know it's there and I know I will get it fixed but it's not stopping me from using the machine and enjoying it for the purposes I bought it for.

If your someone that is OCD about ever detail of your life, don't buy it. If you can deal with the fact you may have to return or exchange/fix the computer you buy then go for it. Simple choice really.

This is a week 51 machine, the first two were week 46 and 47 both way worse then this current one. I have an Applecare case # and it's been noted this one has the yellow tint and I'm waiting for Apple to figure out a resolution. Still love working and playing on this machine and a little yellow tint won't change that fact.

Why not wait till the generation after the next just to be extra sure?

I'm not going to drop nearly 3 grand on a computer and then deal w/all these issues.

What problems? This is getting tired, but while there are some who have had problems (and whose posts you will obviously read in user help forums), there are also plenty of people with perfect 27" iMacs out there.

I had problems with the last generation. This one's been a dream.
