I have an iPhone 5s (my first iPhone) and I recently upgraded to iOS 8.4.1.. Ever since, my battery life hasn't been very good and I have to honestly say I wish I never upgraded. Should I be afraid to update to ios9? Because I REALLY am....

Scared to Update 5s to iOS 9

I have a 64GB 5S and in some of the developer betas my iOS 9 battery life was terrible. However, the latest public betas seemed to have fixed that issue.
I would say my battery life now is at least as good as it's ever been. The optimization improvements they talked about seem to show now.

iOS 9 is lovely on iPhone 5s. While you might experience jitters in spotlight and switcher(rare) it's in most ways better than iOS 8. Searching within apps.. Can't live without it anymore!
No one says you have to upgrade to iOS 9.0. You can always stay right where you are and wait for Apple to fix some of the glitches and release an updated iOS 9.x.x. For us, iOS 9.0 has worked well for all the devices in our family.
I'm hanging back for now. Why? After reading TidBits' article, it appears that neither of our Macs, which are running 10.6.8, will be able to see my iPhone's content, we won't be able to backup to the Mac or easily exchange photos.
My major backup resource now is iCloud, so maybe it's not important. Do folks have some thoughts or experience with doing this.
Of course, one answer would be for us to just get a newer Mac...but that wouldn't be the cowboy way!
Like you said, being on 10.6.8 and not updating to a newer Mac, that poses some issues for you to consider.
I'm up-to-date on my Mac's and do local iTunes backups, and avoid using the iCloud to backup my stuff.
My 5s is running fine on 9.0 (after some issues with slide to upgrade bug). I updated from 7.1.2 and there is no noticeable difference in battery life. I charge overnight, use fairly extensively (although not games or video) and usually plug in when I go to bed with about 20% left.
Some minor jitters but nothing that ruins the experience for me.

Why not try it for yourself and if you don't like it downgrade back to 8.4.1(while you can)...I personally think it lags all over the place on my 5s but had to install it to try the watch os2.
Edit: Otherwise I would have definitely stayed on 8.4.1
I don't know what's with these positive responses. Placebo effects, I suppose.

And yes, I did try a fresh install and I also went to the Apple Store to test it out and it was just as laggy on the display iPhone 5s's.
But, to be fair, the battery life was improved on 9.0 compared to 8.4.1.

Possibly because some people have had a worse experience compared to others who didn't have similar issues or those issues weren't to the same degree that they would be of much consequence to them.
I was debating the same question last night, except I'm on a 6.
If you ordered a new 6s, then I wouldn't update it. I haven't updated my 6 and plan on keeping it on this current version in case I don't like the update because come friday i'll have the 6s+ and it'll be running the new OS.

I tested out the Apple Store display iPhones and iPads and got similar results.
All of them lag, with the exception of the iPad Air 2 and iPhone 5 from what I tested.
For me it's rememnisent of the 4S on iOS 7, the beginning of the end.
Since speed and smoothness were a "feature" of iOS 9 I'm keeping my fingers crossed Apple will come through on that. But currently it's not there, I'd just hold off for a bit if your worried about it.

iOS 6 was a blast on A5 devices.
I remember when I got my iPod touch 5th generation with the A5 and I was blown away at how fast it was.
Also, iOS 9 is not faster on the iPhone 4s from what I've seen. It sucks, I know.

I was considering updating to iOS 9, but what's the point of better battery life if the phone just becomes laggy...? Lesson learned. I think from now on I will never update my iPhone to a new operating system and will just keep the IOS that it comes with...

I did, and I was worried about some of the iOS 9 beta feedback. But 9 is great for me, and I'm glad that I did, especially with all the stability and new features baked in!
I haven't upgraded myself because of the same reason .. I guess I am a bit "scared" because I really like the stability and performance of 8.4.1 and I don't want to sacrifice those for any of the new features which are nothing special in my opinion anyway ..
I don't think that iOS 9 at the moment is either faster of more stable than 8.4.1 .. When 9.1 or 9.2 lands then maybe .. Until then, I'm happy at 8.4.1

Same here... I keep reaching for the Download & Install button, but then think better of it.
I compared a 5s/iPad 2 on 8.4.1 to the same device on ios 9. The 5s had no difference but the iPad 2 felt like a brand new device.
Anyone try low power mode overnight when ur phone has 100%? On iOS 8 if I'd unplug my phone at 10pm i'd wake up the next morning on 91% so is it similar or better?
