A friend advised me that I should have waited until 9.2 and that is what I highly recommend. I updated my 5s on release day and wish I'd waited. The battery life absolutely SUCKS and iCloud does not update to the phone as fast as it did with 8.4. I've been very tempted to go back to a flip phone, that is how much I hate OS9. I've barely used my 5s (I avoid using it as much as possible) since updating and before I was using it constantly. Those of you that have not updated I really envy you as updating on release day was the absolute worst and wrong thing to do. I even told the lady from Apple that I talked to on Sunday about the lousy battery life with 9 and she was not aware of the issue so that has me really wondering if Apple is listening or even cares.

You can still go back to 8.4.1 but you better hurry. Soon Apple will stop letting users downgrade.

I have an iPhone 5s (my first iPhone) and I recently upgraded to iOS 8.4.1.. Ever since, my battery life hasn't been very good and I have to honestly say I wish I never upgraded. Should I be afraid to update to ios9? Because I REALLY am....
Out of my 5S, 6+ and iPad Mini, the one I updated so far is the 5S. It is running as if it came with it installed. It is fast and as stable. My battery life is amazing. I did a fresh install.

I still have iOS 7 on my iPhone 5s and don't plan to upgrade. I use my iPad mini for most of my portable computing needs, and use the iPhone mostly just as a phone.

Ironic that my 5 is running better with OS9 than my 5s.
That's also what I have noticed on some performance comparison, animations seems snappier. I'm wondering what the **** is Apple doing if A6 chip now handle iOS better than A7. I'm seriously considering jumping on the Android boat (stock Android not ****** TouchWizz, etc) because I'm getting tired to not have this constant 60 frames per second experience I used to have on iOS 6 or even 7.

For me it's rememnisent of the 4S on iOS 7, the beginning of the end.

Since speed and smoothness were a "feature" of iOS 9 I'm keeping my fingers crossed Apple will come through on that. But currently it's not there, I'd just hold off for a bit if your worried about it.
Lawdy, I wish Apple would let you down grade to the OS that came with your phone. I'm hating the direction they've been going with their iOS since about version 6 and 8.4 was the nail in the coffin for me. I swear they design their new OS on the iPad and then smash it down to the littler phones.

OP, no rush. And if you're weary of more bloat and more useless uses for siri, then just stay on the OS you're on.

Most people with iPads would likely disagree with that saying that iPads haven't been getting that much attention aside from maybe some more with iOS 9.

I agree completely. And I'd be more prone to upgrade my i-stuff if I knew I could reverse the upgrade if I wasn't happy with it.

Just like you can on Mac. And then Apple is going to tell you that iOS 9 is installed on 50% of all iOS devices, great but how many people regret and wish they could downgrade ? I bet more than 30%.

Nice made up figure there.

The typical user is not well represented on the macrumors forum. I don't know anyone who has updated who regrets it outside of on here. Most people seem to be either happy with or indifferent to the update. I definitly wouldn't use my antecdotal experience as any indication of the mass appeal or mass hatred of iOS 9.

My 5S runs just fine, but the battery life is probably half of what it was on 8.4.1. I am going to try a restore and set up as new phone tonight, so I'll see if that helps.

I know a lot of people that complain about the phone not functioning properly after installing for instance iOS 8.0 or iOS 9.0. It's normal for these first releases right out of beta to have many many bugs.

There are things it does great, and others it does are messy.
If you want my opinion, iOS 9 is still in beta. Wait for 9.1

It was a little bit laggy for me the first day, especially when I'd get a text while in another app and when I pulled down on the text, the whole phone would freeze. Then I restored from new, and THEN restored from a backup and it seemed to smooth things out a little, though for a couple more days, there was still a little lag. Now, nearly a week later, it's actually running very smoothly with very little if any lag that I'm noticing. I'm assuming it's that whole indexing thing. I'm pretty happy with it now, which is good, because I'm giving it to an ex-girlfriend (we're cool) as her first iPhone when I move up to the 6S Plus as soon as I can get my hands on one.

Much better than I expected .. The only thing that bothered me was the control center lag .. Will upgrade when 9.1 hits ..

Here, there and everywhere
I've been running the iOS 9 betas on my 5S and yes the battery life has been awful with the device often running far too hot. (Like I can feel it through my pocket on my leg hot). The GM was MUCH improved, but occasionally it would still run too hot/battery life vanish; I think its related to photos/photos app. As the days I don't touch the camera I don't seem to run into the battery drain.

Keeping 8.4.1 until my next upgrade in March, 2017. Stable version of iOS 10 will have arrived by then. I get around 5 - 6 hours of usage on my 5S. Sometimes 4 hours (I mostly use Yahoo news, Hollywood Reporter, movie news app, message app called Line, Outlook, iBooks and browsing on Safari at 25% brightness. Many system settings like app refresh, location alerts, etc are disabled. No games or FB).

While new features on iOS 9 are tempting, I don't plan on updating unless there is unanimous agreement on battery life improvement. So far, I've heard from people that iOS 9 has not improved or decreased battery life on 5S. In Apple's favor, general consensus seems to lean towards "not improved," but some of my friends commented battery runs out after less than 4 hours. These 5S' were purchased and activated in the past year or so.

I assume you have already done the a full discharge/charge cycle on your phone, did a hard reset, checked battery for which apps is eating your battery life, and lastly restore from itunes? If you have done so, then you just may have a battery that's starting to go bad.

I've a 5s that ran ios 7, ios 8 and now ios 9. Have been very happy with my battery life on all the ios releases. That of course is factoring the fact that my 5s is almost 2 years old, so I am not expecting my battery life to be the same as the first day I got the phone. Think about it, if you charge your phone everyday, that would be about 700 cycles in 2 years. I googled "li-ion performance over time" and it is quite normal to expect a li-ion battery's capacity to fall a bit over time.

I have an iPhone 5s (my first iPhone) and I recently upgraded to iOS 8.4.1.. Ever since, my battery life hasn't been very good and I have to honestly say I wish I never upgraded. Should I be afraid to update to ios9? Because I REALLY am....

My performance has been fine with my 5s on iOS 9. I've had very little lag anywhere. It's been nothing to speak of really. However, after updating OTA my battery life was horrible.

Yesterday I did a DFU restore on iTunes with 9.0.1 and set up as a new phone. I then installed all my apps and set up my settings. Full charge overnight last night. Today my battery life has been 2-3x as good. I have 2 hours 1 min usage and 3 hours 47 min standby and am at 80%. Two days ago after ~3 hours use and ~5 standby I was at 35%. So a clean install definitely did wonders for my battery life. And performance is still great.

So no complaints here with 5S on 9.0.1.
