Odd response? I was basically called a thief by someone in this thread who said I ‘pilfered’ them. What would you say if someone accused you of being a thief? Even when clearly said, the same people who instructed me to go there and escort way team didn’t have a problem with it. I personally see where these things go, it’s not a good home.

I didn't accuse you of pilfering. I said "I suspect they wouldn't be too happy to hear their employee had taken it upon themselves to pilfer them. if I took it upon myself to just grab whatever I wanted out of e-waste, my employer would almost certainly fire me. However, it could be totally different where OP works."

I knew about the Iris Pro 2015, I'm typing this on one right now!

So, since it doesn't have the M370X, then it can run Mavericks?
Curious about this as well. Is there any link to someone having unofficially run mavericks on a 2015 mbp? The force touch trackpad would mean that it wouldn't "just work" but assuming graphics acceleration works properly it would be "easy" to write a shim for that.

@Wowfunhappy tried on https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/os-x-mavericks-on-mid-2015-rmbp.2137384/ but I think that might have been a 13" since it seems to have had iris 6100

Also re: the rest of the thread, machine disposal policy varies by company. Usually smaller ones or ones not in major corporate geographies won't really care, but usually big firms (and those in e.g. US) will want a record of having been donated or disposed since I think they get some tax benefit from this (or rather if they allowed employees to take it they'd have to count this as a gift or something?).

Got in and went up to the floor. OMG! There were like over 200 2015 MBP's vast majority in great condition sitting there ready to go to eWaste. I looked for the very best and picked out a few and grabbed a charger.

Aaaaaaaaaaaaa!

When I read that kind of stuff, I just facepalm at the industry. I have an early 2015 MBP I can’t use because the retina display is ruined and Apple won’t allow LG to sell the part. And here they, the industry are, sending scores of MBPs to the e-cycle grinder heap. :headdesk:

Anyway, save as many of those as you can! Mercy knows salvaged components from the less cosmetically-attractive examples will come in handy for an ecosystem of folks trying to keep their gear running!

Crazy that this thread is in “early intel macs” like these are some kind of antiques. My mac is a 2015 13”, and it could use a new battery, but other than that, it runs great! Congrats on the pickup, OP!

What is with all these people thinking 2015 MacBook Pros are going to end up in landfill or being scavenged for metals?

They're almost certainly going to be data wiped and sold on to be used by someone else, possibly even education.

That's how ewaste works.

I’m aware of how e-waste works, and I’m also aware how different jurisdictions handle e-waste streaming in different manners.

Even outside brick and mortar Apple Stores in the U.S., several locations use a dedicated dumpster for laptops and iPads destined for e-waste management — ostensibly, for either refurbishment, or else to be sent for separating the easily reusable components (like glass and aluminium melt-down). Here in Canada, it’s handled provincially, and some of it, as least in this province, gets a second-go at end-user usage at re-use centres. They tend, however, to only be the cleanest of the clean, whereas others are prepped and steadily stacked into cargo containers until they’re full and ready for take-away.

With the original poster hailing from Jamaica, it’s without doubt that, nationally, they also handle e-waste in their own way. There is not, at present, a singular, universal way in which e-waste streams are managed. Moreover, the transparency of those streams are not always clear, publicly speaking.

It's not public though. It's a company or institution isn't it? From their comments, it looks like most of the company is operating on a very normal 3 year cycle, where the devices go out of warranty after 3 years and are replaced with new ones, and the old ones get taken away for "ewaste", where anything that can be sold on will be sold on, at financial advantage to both the company and the ewaste guys.

Its actually 2014 when I looked in the About.

While I am happy for you the situation teh_hunterer described happened to me. I was fired and charged with felony theft. I had to pay an attorney $5K and eventually, after a plea deal, had to pay $5K in restitution along with a years unsupervised probation. I, like you, had been given permission by the individual in charge of disposal but when he was asked he said "No, I never gave him permission". Needless to say I was livid as I had been given permission but my attorney stated even if the guy acknowledged giving me the items he lacked the authority to do so.

So, yeah, it happens. First hand experience.

Well, the communications regarding the three I took are in MS Teams, some of it orally. I'll also confirm with my core supervisor today. If they say its a problem, I'll just take them to the cage. Its not like I really need them, I have a M1 MBP and my 'bought with my own money' 2015 13 inch. It just felt so bad seeing them all going ecycle though. Because I know these are not going back into any form of production.

I'm just curious, what do you mean by "going back into any form of production"? I didn't understand that before either.

I hope you get to keep them as that's an awesome score! As for communication I would ensure any communication you have is not tied to your employers systems (i.e. email, Teams, etc.) Make sure you have your own, hardcopy which includes the date / time / sender / subject / and the actual communications. You may want to send something to them to the effect of:

Per our conversation on such and such a date I want to confirm that these devices are being disposed of by te company and that you have the authority to give them to me.

Assuming you have a good faith belief that the individual you are reaching out to does have the authority. I don't want to be a buzzkill but since I went through it I thought I'd let you know.

The thread I spotted is the one you linked to. I seem to have mis-remembered — the OP couldn't get graphics acceleration working despite the MacBookPro11,4 having the same Iris Pro 5200 as the MacBookPro11,2. 🤷‍♂️

I was using an 11" Macbook Air, not a Macbook Pro. (I hijacked the thread of someone using a MBP.) I indeed could not get graphics acceleration working (or the keyboard or trackpad, although I might have been able to make those work with more effort), and I was also using a custom kernel.

But the reason I had so much trouble is that the 2015 MBA uses Broadwell. If you're using Ivy Bridge, it makes sense that would work!

I'm still surprised it worked out of the box though! The installer has a whitelist of Mac models, and I wouldn't have expected any model that came out in 2015 to be on the whitelist.

Edit:

Oh, that makes more sense! Well, lucky you, enjoy Mavericks!

Got it. So that means as far as I'm aware running 10.9 on a mid-2015 mbp should still be feasible. The only material hardware change seems to be the switch from pcie 2.0 to pcie 3.0. I don't know if this is an issue for mavericks, but I'd assume not?
