Okay so it happened to my watch as well and this I think was due to say oils while cooking etc and it was weird!!! When at times I cooked with the Apple Watch day a stir fry or so and drops of oil would fly on it it all started from there!
Anyways some else went wrong with my watch and apple did not have a replacement ( hermes series 4 ) so they landed up giving me a brand new retail watch after 10 months which is just amazing of apple!!!

Here is my report. To make it short: no chance!
They said it is a cosmetic damage, caused by me with some fluid or something and did not replace the watch. And then I start to think about.....perhaps...I´ve used the dishwash to clean my display a few times.
It could be the reason cause my ip8 has some similar problems.
But i´m also quite sure that I have done that from time to time with my ip5 and ip6+ for years and nothing happened. Have these older models also had some oleophobic coating? Or is it introcuced with the iPhone 8 and newer?
Ok..I will deal with it and next year I´m going to buy the watch 6. My ip8 will go for a very good price to a friend.
Now I will buy some new microfaser, throw away the old ones and will never go to my kitchen again. ;) :(

If you think about it, dish soap is used to clean oil and grease. I just use a lightly dampened microfiber wipe and cotton swab for the hard to reach crevices.

Thanks everyone, it will be interesting to see Apple’s response. I will post back once they get back to me.

So new watch arrived and looks great, no sign at all of the problem I was having. They have confirmed it is a replacement watch and not mine repaired. They have not said what caused it and couldn’t add AppleCare to it as its past the 60 day mark. Hopefully this problem doesn’t happen again.

On discussing the issue with a friend the exact same thing happened to him too, worth keeping an eye on them if you. Bought them at launch.

I also left feedback with apple saying I wasn’t that impressed with the initial attitude of the genius. I got a phone call to say they had spoken to him and he has realised he could have done more to help, so hopefully this helps too.
Hello
I’m facing a similar issue with my Series 3 which is 6 months old
Can you please, perhaps send me your service no I’ll use that as precedent.
the apple store fella thinks that I won’t get a replacement.

Apple handles each repair on a case by case basis. Giving an employee someone else’s service number will do you no good. It would also be a violation of privacy.

Oh thanks for the insight
How do you think I should frame the issue to get a maximum chance of replacement?

You mean you won’t get a maximum chance of anything. You’re Better off scrapping your watch and finding a refurb.
