Old question, but for anyone reading the thread with a similar question... one port connects the Mac Pro to the home LAN, and the other connects to my photo printer (Epson 3800). Using the ethernet connection simply allows me to physically locate this rather large printer further away from my desk than the USB connection allows. The smaller desktop-class USB printer can stay close and convenient.
