Hi All,

I have cast an eye over the forums and found similar topics but without the answer I need so I am hoping someone can help.

I have an iMac 27" 2020 model.

I was using a second monitor:
Acer K242HL 24” (1920X1080) Full HD 60HZ
Using VGA connector to USB-C connector (purchased from Apple)

Now, for over a year when ever I used Photoshop it would crash the Mac. So in that time, after trying many things, it turns out if I disconnect the second monitor Photoshop works absolutely fine and doesn't crash.

After replacing the connector with a new one to see if that was the fault, it turns out the problem remained so must be the second monitor.

I am after a 24"-27" monitor. What second monitors do some of you use and what connection are you using between the Mac and the second monitor?

I am obviously reluctant to just buy anything at the moment incase I need a certain spec second monitor OR I need to connect them via a specific cable. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards
Mark

You can try a different monitor but that's just another troubleshooting step. I'd be willing to bet it won't change the behavior. Why? Because I see similar issues at the Adobe forums from people with other brands of monitors. The threads I read didn't have a happy ending which leads me to believe that those folks didn't get satisfaction with the setup they were running at the time.

Are you using the latest version of Photoshop? What version of macOS? Was there a time when two monitors worked on that iMac with PS? If so, was there a macOS or Photoshop update prior to the problem occurring?

Hi Brian,
Thank you for the reply.

I would tend to agree with you that a change of monitor might not be the solution.

Yes I am on the latest version of Photoshop but also tried later versions without success.

I am on Monterey 12.4
When I first got the Mac I was on Big Sur and obviously went through the different versions they released of that but I think it started off pre-installed around 11.1 (don't quote me on that).

The two monitors never worked with Photoshop from day one. As soon as the iMac was unboxed I connected the second monitor (which has never been changed).

One odd thing is that I never had Photoshop on the second monitor but it still crashed the entire mac.
The second monitor was on.

I did actually catch the moment it crashed while using photoshop.
This shows what I was doing to cause the crash.

The second video is actually a follow up video of the first. I stopped the first video once it crashed the Mac, but I quickly started recording again to show how long the crash took to reboot. Pretty boring videos but you never know, someone might spot something.

If anyone wanted the Apple crash report it won't be a problem to make it crash to get it lol

If I am not using Photoshop I can use the second monitor no problem with all other programs I have installed. Just Photoshop does something to really annoy it.

(...) and what connection are you using between the Mac and the second monitor?
VGA is analog (and outdated) and should be avoided if a digital connection is possible. Which in your situation is the case: Your existing monitor has a digital DVI input.
Of course you need a new adapter or cable (USB-C to DVI).
If you purchase a new monitor, use HDMI/Displayport or DVI and forget VGA.
Not sure if it helps with your Photoshop problem, but overall image quality (sharpness/color accuracy) should improve.
You could disable Hardware/GPU-acceleration in Photoshop to see if that makes a difference (no fun using it without on a daily basis).
Photoshop > Settings > Performance > use GPU [deselect] (or whatever it's in English)
To attach the crash report is always a good idea.

Hello,

Thank you for the advice.
That is a good idea in regards to using the DVI input. I have ordered a cable to do the job.

Once that arrives I will give Photoshop a go again.
If it crashes I'll save the crash report.

I'll then try Photoshop again by disabling the Hardware/GPU-acceleration and see how that works out.

I'll then report back.

Thank you for the advice 👍

Hiya,

Just an update.

So I got the new lead, DVI to USB-C. I used Photoshop for an hour and it crashed.

I have attached an image of the Photoshop settings before I disabled it, just incase that highlights something.

I am starting to think that it might be a lost cause but I'll ask some mates if I can borrow one of their monitors so I don't have to fork out any money to see if it works or not. I can report back the results.

Based on what I've seen it seems to be an unresolved software issue with Photoshop.

Have you tried opening Photoshop without the second monitor attached and then connecting the monitor after PS is open?

Sorry for the late reply Brian,

I have just given that a go as I haven't done so before.
It crashed after about 15 minutes.

I'll put the crash report at the bottom.

I am borrowing my mates Philips monitor this week to see if that works.... if it doesn't it is just the iMac having an issue with Photoshop somewhere along the lines.

I'll keep you posted on the outcome.

Thank you for your help
Kind regards
Mark

Update and unfortunately no good news.

I have used my mates second monitor, a Phillips 272P7VPTKEB which I was hopeful of when it said in the specifications that it was plug and play with Mac OSX.

I used HDMi to USB-C cable from curry's - brand Sandstrom

I used Photoshop on off last week with no problems. I thought the problem was solved and then it crashed last night.
I'll attach the crash code at the bottom.

So I can only think it is an Apple IOS issue that might get solved if they were aware of the problem.

As it stands, I'll just be disconnecting the second monitor to use Photoshop. But it is just a shame we couldn't get to the route problem.

Thanks for your help
Mark
