Care to share that link?

Just go to Apple's downloads page and select the appropriate update:

https://support.apple.com/en_US/downloads

I downloaded the 2020-001 Security Update for Catalina from the above link (as mentioned, the file is about 1.33 GB in size). Unfortunately, it gets stuck at the "Preparing Security Update 2020-001" step. By "stuck" I mean that it appears to be downloading something (my gateway's data light is toggling). (Maybe it's downloading the 1.76 GB update.) Unfortunately, my internet speed is slow (less than 1 Mbps), so I didn't want to wait too long for it to finish (it was still downloading after 20 minutes, so I quit out of everything). I've never seen an update from Apple that I've downloaded that then requires more downloading in order to install it!

Makes me wonder if Apple posted the wrong update to its website.

There's nothing wrong with the download on the website, but installing does take a long time. I'd just use Software Update and let it do its thing.

I just had to get a MacMini 2018 at my collocation center WIPED with a T2 FW patch to fix mine.. and they said the FW fix wiped the drives, because of a failed BootROM or whatever FW update...SOB!

Be careful...

I just updated from Mojave and fortunately did not experience this, maybe I should just go back to Mojave...

Update: I let the 1.33 GB version of the security update (from Apple's website) continue downloading while the installer was "stuck" at "Preparing Security Update 2020-001." After a little more than an hour it finished downloading and sucessfully installed the security update.

On my slow home internet connection I can download about 400 MB per hour. 1.76 GB - 1.33 GB = 430 MB.

This makes me wonder if Apple posted the "base" install of the security update (if there is such a thing) on its website instead of the "full" install, since it appears my 2018 Mac mini had to download additional files. That saved me about 3 hours of downloading on the Mac mini.

I'm having a LOT of problems booting from my external SSD now after installing this on my late 2013 iMac. Holding down the option key whilst booting only shows me my internal fusion drive. The SSD and my Time Machine drive do not show up. When I am in Finder they are accessible as nowmal.

I've reset the NV/PRAM already, hooked the SSD up as the only external and sometimes it shows up and I can boot into it, but after a restart it's not showing up again.. I am out of ideas on how to fix this, any ideas?
I am experiencing the same issue, but on Mojave after the 2020-007 security update. Really weird, Apple seems to fix one issue and then create half dozen other issues. I've lost my faith in them.

You're correct, the Security Update 2020-001 download on Apple's website appears to be okay. I more-or-less confirmed that this is the security update sans the Boot ROM update. Apparently if the Boot ROM needs updating, it will be downloaded per the model of Mac being updated, which is what I was seeing.

I was troubleshooting another Catalina issue and reinstalled an earlier build. When I checked Software Update, this is what I found:

Screen Shot 2020-12-17 at 8.17.04 PM.png

Since my Boot ROM had already been updated, I now only needed the 1.32 (or 1.33) GB Security Update 2020-001 file.

Guys did you notice that after security update upgraded the boot ROM, Blackmagic disk speed test measure 100 MB/s less on our SSDs both during writing and reading. I always check after every update if SSD speed changes. I see this is a negative thing. Is it possible to downgrade boot ROM manually?

Apple stopped permitting users to update the bootroms themmselves some time ago. Its now built into the MACOS upgrade. Its a go forward never go back situation.

Similar problem with my late 2013 iMac, here. I’ve tried reformatting the external ssd and attempted to reinstall Catalina on this drive. The installation doesn’t take and the drive, while healthy and able to store data, will not function as a bootable startup. I’m trying a lengthy Time Machine restore onto the ssd now. PS I read another solution for user who had same problem. After 3x NV/PRAM resets, the external drive was then recognised as a startup source and they could run with this as before.

Exact same problem here on the exact same iMac machine. Doing a time machine restore now.

Beware this update if you have an older computer...

On a Mac mini late 2012 (i7, 16 GB RAM, aftermarket SSD) I notice a large performance dip after 10 minutes of not using keyboard or mouse for input.

The screen saver, or apps that act like one (like Earth 3D) go from a smooth rendering to about 1 FPS. Before the security update all was well.
Opening Activity viewer, you can see the CPU time for Earth 3D drop from around 30% to 1-2% after the 10 mins.
Touching keyboard or mouse gets it back to around the 30%, and all is smooth again.

Feels like some form of "sleep", i.e. low-power mode, but I cannot find any settings that would influence it.
I have done a reset of SMC and NVRAM.

Both hardware issues have been solved by entering recovery with

Code:
sudo nvram "recovery-boot-mode=unused"
sudo reboot

And disabling SIP with
Code:
csrutil disable

Finally, I installed "legacy audio patch" and "legacy wifi patch" from @dosdude1 Catalina patcher.

Recovery Partition still not visible in OC boot picker, though. Corrected using appropriate OpenCore settings.

Ive been running Catalina since it came out on an external SSD drive, with NO problems. Since installing 2020-001, it will NOT boot the SSD. I tried reinstalling OS multiple times, reinstalled OS on internal drive, then attempted reinstall on SSD(won’t install), tried Time Machine, no luck. Used CCC to clone internal OS to SSD, reset nvram multiple times, removed all other usb drives, set boot drive multiple times, will not boot from SSD. Any suggestions? Internal Owl SSD drive on order, but after several days fighting this, I’m POed and want my iMac back NOW.

Same problem here.

Only thing I have found that works consistently is to do the following:

1) Shut down computer;
2) Unplug the external SSD while it is shut down;
3) Turn on computer and hold down "Alt" key, which I think is the "Option" key while it is booting;
4) This will take you to the startup disk selector;
5) Once this comes up, plug the SSD back in;
6) It will then appear on the list of bootable drives and you can select it.

This will work, but if you restart, it will again boot from the internal, but at least this will get you to your SSD.

Hopefully Apple fixes soon. What a mess this update is...

I experienced a similar problem with my late 2013 and was only able to solve the issue was by removing an additional external drive that is always connected along with the external SSD startup disk. Note: Before trying this solution I restored the external SSD start up drive from a Time Machine backup that I did from a day before -- This did work, with no surprises by rebooting and doing a Restore (Command + R) and choosing the Time Machine back up disk.

Yes, I finally got it working by doing something similar. One of my externals has 2 extra USB ports and I have now hooked up two externals to that and now it seems to boot normally from my external SSD again ?‍♂️?‍♂️

All I have to say is that I should have stayed on Mojave, but at least safari isn’t using my dgpu just to work.
