Seems a long time waiting for iOS 5.1 upgrade.
Based on what? Your arbitrary gut feeling? If you don't know what's in it then why do you think you have a reasonable expectation of when it should be released?

Because as I understand it the 5.1 Beta was released well before Christmas, and I was told by a guy at the app store that they'd be getting Europe Siri going early in the new year ( which considering Apple use it to promote the phone in European advertising I think they should get it up to US performance levels )

You do know the beta process is longer than just one beta, right? Also, never trust what anyone from the Apple Store says... They know just as much, if not less than you do. They're just salesmen that are put on a higher pedestal because of the company that employs them. We're waiting for Beta 3 to come out and the going theory is that 5.1 isn't going to be at GM until the release of iPad 3. Looks like we have a longer wait than usual for updates, but the process never happens as quickly as you seem to think it does.

It is not taking any longer than usual. I actually think Apple has been updating iOS pretty rapidly. They have to test updates thoroughly to avoid putting out flawed products. Your expectations are not very reasonable.

from Wikipedia, for 5.1 beta:
"Users can now enter any Apple ID to sign up for an iCloud account. Previously, users had to create a new MobileMe account."

Clarification needed here...
Does this mean a FULL email address (ie. letting non- @me.com ones, eg. Gmail, Yahoo, etc.) still has be used, or can non-email address Apple IDs (eg. "firstname.secondname") now be used to set-up and use iCloud?

Any devs have the skinny (PLEASE with a cherry on top someone has some info :)?

it will be released when its done. simple as that. i'd rather they take their time with it and make sure it is done right than have to deal with a whole new set of issues.

Like the awesome job they did with i4s in a year and a half aye?
Springing through my 7th i4s now...all of them yellowgated so far, running the ultra power hungry ios5..well done.

Erm, yeah... clearly when it's done.

But I am very sceptical about it being a massive change that is gonna be released for a possible iPad 3 MARCH (ie. 3 months away!) release, as the wiki page (that I presumed a dev with access to the betas has updated) makes it pretty clear that it's mostly bug/issue fixes.

Beta 1 arrived Nov.29, beta 2 Dec.12 — how many betas are normally gone through in iOS releases anyhow?

(Wiki quick link (scroll down to 5.1): http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IOS_version_history#iOS_5.x:_fifth_major_OS_release )

odd. i am very happy with my iPhone 4S and never expected anything more than that. no problems with mine and its quite stable and the battery life is certainly better than my iPhone 3GS

iOS 5.0 had 8 betas... To offer some sort of comparison, iOS 4.1, the first major release after iOS 4.0 took four or five betas from what I remember. We're only up to Beta 2 on 5.1 as you've pointed out. The process for iOS 5.x and 5.x.x is going to take longer because of the problems that are said to be mostly software based. Give it some time... Let the devs find the problems early so you don't have to deal with them when you inevitably get 5.1

Should get one shortly after the media event in NYC next week. I think it will have the whatever new feature for textbooks among other things.

There's been nothing in any of the betas to suggest implementing anything like this. If anything there will be another beta after the event... They're not going to release a public update with a new feature without testing it out first. My money is still on mid February to early March for an official public 5.1 update... Depends on whether they want to coincide with the iPad 3 release.

They did with ioS 5 and Siri.

Beta testers had 4 months of betas with hardly a hint of Siri, only the other features. It's entirely plausible.

Apple has a boatload of internal testing capability.

They can update their iBooks app independently of the OS.

Siri was what Apple considered a game changer... a gigantic feature. I have a feeling this feature is not going to be as high up on the totem pole as Siri was for Apple... then again if they're devoting an entire event to it maybe you're right.

reread the post you quoted. Thats exactly what he said.
I think they were referring to a public release because of the title of the thread, which is why I responded the way I did. If he meant another beta, then obviously my response is moot.

Wow, I've never seen so many snarky-ass comments in one thread. How DARE the OP question Apple's wisdom!

Cant wait for this update.

Can I ask something? If anyone remembers...

What is the longest that the public have had to wait for an new update?

For example, the last update which was 5.0.1 was released last year so we've had to wait a good few months.

Has there been an update in previous iOS's that has taken longer in between?

Thanks

what? do you mean hope it doesn't come out until Feb? or that it comes out before Feb?

I agree with one of the posters above that said it probably wont come out till Early March

Public release would be any day from now to Feb 1st...
