It's no different then telling your insurance company that your car got stolen, collecting for it, then selling it. It LEGALLY belongs to the INSURANCE CO to do with it what they want. Amex doesn't insure the phone, there is an insurance company that does it for them.
Actually, Amex is self insured. Meaning they eat the expense every time they cover a loss.
And yes, if the phone is recovered, it belongs to Amex.

To the OP, I am an employee with American Express (Lead Programmer), and I would love to hear more about your friends "loss". I don't work in the fraud division, but have many friends there who would love to read more.

Plus with the cost of the iPhone it is a Felony... whether you look at it as credit card fraud or insurance fraud

I forwarded the thread to Amex's fraud unit and they said they have the IP information and have tracked it down.

So all they have to do now is await the fraudulent request.

My cousin works there and he says people try this all the time.
PM me your cousins name... I probably know him.

As for coverage... the OP's friend would had to have used a Gold or Platinum Rewards card to get that level of coverage to replace an iPhone, or any cell phone for that matter.

The Green charge card and the Blue credit card offer some coverage, but not for cell phones.

Depends on what state he lives in... in AZ, anything under $500, is a misdemeanor.
Some states go as high as $1,500 before they call it a felony.

True... there was a case not to long ago in Fairfax where a guy was charged with stealing an iPhone from a store. He got charged with a Felony. He was charged for the non-contract replacement price of 600. Not to sure how it would be for a person reporting it stolen... but still not worth it...

Can I get arrested if I find a iphone in an airplane seat at LAX?

Is it truth, it's built in GPS? can track me down? from anywhere? even if i find it and don't return it a year later?:p

(just asking) lol
