They take advantage of pent-up demand to get a higher profit margin for the shiny new things. The price will go down over time after the market has been saturated a bit, when the new Mac Pro has fully taken its place as a regular member of the Mac lineup.

Also, when the new Mac Pro is updated, the cost of the model due for release this Fall should be much more affordable, either through third parties or refurbished from Apple.

EDIT: Missed your most recent post.

And Apple's history of pricing products. I started with used G4 many years ago went to a Hackintosh, then Mac Pro1,1 then 3,1 onto a 5,1 and said see you later to Hackintosh again when the trash can came out. I like the operating system but the over priced hardware and upgrade lockin never again. Windows 10 is more than usable as I have discovered when purchasing new laptop earlier this year. When High Sierra is done with security support it is where I will end up I think. Hell I think if I want I can run a supported MacPro5,1 on it, the irony does not impress me...

If you can hold on to your 2013 Mac Pro a bit longer, just wait until the cost of the new Mac Pro goes down.

Traditionally Apple always applies prestige pricing to brand new products. They did this with the original MacBook Air (classic example) and the new Mac Pro is no different.
This hasn't been my experience / observation. In fact it has been just the opposite, Apple doesn't reduce prices unless they're clearing out old inventory after an improved model has replaced it.

I'm in the same boat as you. Own a nMP 12core, 32gb of RAM, 1tb nvme recently upgraded and dual D700.

Sure I won't buy the new one... as I cannot justify around 10k euro for my hobby. I think I will continue with it another 2 or three years and then I will go for a macmini or a macbook pro with eGPU.

I'm an IT manager who use windows during the day but for my photography and video enthusiast needs I prefer macOS with FCPX.

Personally I would just throw an egpu into the mix. While not fully supported with apple it still seams very easy to make work. Thunderbolt 2 still seems to test fine for the card bandwidth with a Vega or RX580.

If that doesn't sound appealing, Apple is offering trade-ins on Macs. I just checked I can get $1020 for my 6 core 6,1 with d500s. I would just put that into a new Mac mini and then get a fully supported TB3 egpu for that.

I can offer you $1,021 for your Mac Pro.
