apple said when they released the new iMacs that there would be news coming soon for the appletv....this has to be it..i'm certain of it....i can't believe they (macrumors) haven't made any mention of this in their posts about likely announcements.....here comes rentals and iTunes store on appletv and a **** load more features!!!! I'm excited!!!!

Perhaps iPods?

Man, I hope you're right, but I can't help feeling this one is about iPods, iPods, The Beatles, iPods, ITMS, iPods and European iPhones deals. (Did I mention iPods?)

A passing mention, like, "And we have opened up our complete collection of wonderful movies to all of our loyal hobbyists who bought the :apple:TV by making the ITMS accessible from their living rooms" will probably what we get. Big whoop.

Prove me wrong, The Steve. Please.

Nonetheless, I want to state that everyone, including myself, who bought this device bought it with its limitations and all. I am still VERY happy with my :apple:TV and if no further improvements were done on it, I'd still be very happy with it. You should be, too, or you shouldn't have bought it.

Like the OP, though, I hope for news.

I can see how this would be an "entertainment" oriented announcement. Everything to do with iTunes/iPods/:apple:TV.

I personally won't even consider getting an Apple TV until there is some sort of lower rate for TV shows (Subscribe for the monthly cost of cable/satalite for maybe 20-30 shows and seasons?) and the ability to rent movies from my couch.

I reckon...

...you could make a pretty strong case for Apple releasing an entry-level, budget :apple:TV with no hard-drive whatsoever. As 802.11n becomes increasingly established among home users I think this could be a real, and very shrewd, addition to the :apple:TV product line-up.

Sod the hard drive, I say. I doubt that Apple are that concerned with the profit made on the :apple:TV units themselves. The :apple:TV is designed to extend the range of the iTunes ecosystem into the living room. An :apple:TV minus hard-drive could be introduced at a much lower cost while keeping the same form-factor and thus facilitating a user upgrade for all the :apple:TV hackers and modders out there.

The more I think about it the more I am convinced that this is the only way for :apple:TV to avoid going the same way as the iPod Hi-Fi.

My tuppence worth.

Since Steve declared us hobbiests, I wouldn't expect anything to be released until maybe one of his kids birthdays or something :p

Who knows, I would think something like Joost support in the next round.

Cool, but not terribly useful.

just a guess

the UK getting TV shows finally...... could have been done ages ago. there's no UK content and the deals were already existing US deals. the timing is odd. i was at the regent street store yesterday and there were no marketing / banners to let you know this development.

i think they wanted to get the basics (including the basic content) out in the wild before the 5th. So that whoever / whatever is new on that day will get the limelight, and not the drowned in the news that South Park or Desperate Housewives are finally available.

just a thought.

Look for a headless iMac either Sept 5 or 25. We all have been waiting so long.........

It wont be just about iPods.... they cant talk about iPods for 2 hours! They will announce the new iPods, the release date of leopard, and possibly an AppleTV update
and some more to fill the time, lol

firmware upgrade to support 5.1 surround sound! and the ability to dl movies/music directly from the apple TV (you know, so you dont have to get off the couch!)

Um, please.

:apple:TV will be supported by Apple because they can pinpoint it into any niche they please. Its capabilities can be expanded through firmware; what's to stop it from becoming some sort of iPhone hub or some other bizarre but useful application?

Maybe the hi-fi will be discontinued.

All we are going to here from apple is that they are drooping the Apple TV, and they will No longer support it.

The Apple TV is something Apple is very excited about. It brings the iTunes store to your TV. THey are not dropping it.

Hogwash.

XBOX 360 = $349
Apple TV = $299

Which do you think does more -- a LOT more?

And yes, I own an Apple TV -- and it's not ALL THAT.

To each his own. The AppleTV is great for those who want it. I wouldn't buy an XBOX for anything. No need for it. But I bought an AppleTV the first weekend it was out and use it everyday for music, videos, video podcasts, YouTube, and home movies. YouTube gets used daily for sure. I love it. I had thought about connecting our Mini to the TV, but this little thing is great for what we needed.

It still has to have enough storage for OS X though. I'm not sure if the couple gigs of flash would be noticeably cheaper than just putting in a small hard drive.

I love my AppleTV. I really don't understand why Canadians cannot buy movies etc. What a travesty!

I am thinking about moving to Canada, loved visiting the country :D
