I reluctantly find myself in the position of looking for an alternative to my iPod Classic. I need an mp3 player that will allow bi directional transfer of contents. I made the dreadful mistake of loading all my music tracks to my iPod from my PC.

Then my PC died and had to be replaced, only then did I find out that I cannot retrieve the music from my iPod in a usable format. Apple have this almost fanatical mantra of "lock the customers in" then squeeze them.

Well Apple, this is one customer that you have pushed away, your lock in has pushed me away. What is worst, is that all the music is paid for.

Please Apple purists, no insults, if you cant offer a reasonable alternative, then don;t reply.:)
Synuti and phoneview are great apps for this. Phoneview obviously is for the newer devices and synuti for the classic. Synuti gives you 1000 free songs transferred before requiring a license.

But a way around that is to download the trial on multiple computers then burn CDs / upload to yours. However it's only 30$ for the full version I believe

Shoulda gone with iTunes Match ;). $25 and all your music stored away on cloud should you ever need to recover....

Also how could you not retrieve your music, on an iPod and a PC its fairly easy to recover music off an iPod.

I'm sure if he spent even a small amount of time trying he would be able to get the music off.

I do not think there is a replacement for this and is most likely why Apple still sells them. I just bought another new anyway, I love having my entire music collection in one place.

I love ipod classic

I love Ipod Classic. I love Apple! However they are being extremely ignorant by discontinuing the classic(they did that today , the same day they released Iphone6)
I say they are being ignorant because they’re removing one product without offering a proper alternative. And I mean a player not a phone or ipad! For my music I prefer a player w/ lots of storage. For me a suitable replacement for the Classic must have lots of storage
So I found the Fiio X5 and there’s also the Zune w/ 120gb
I still need to research which one works better w/ iTunes and if they get all library and art work from itunes… but anyways these 2 are the best replacement so far

The Windows Phone app will work with the Zune. It ties directly with iTunes.

But you are going to be even more foolish to replace it with a device that is 100% extinct now and has been for a few years. If you buy an Apple Classic now, brand new from a proper retailer, you will get the AppleCare for it, and the parts will still be there for a few more years after that.

A Serious alternative to the Classic.

OK, without the fanboys exploding in righteous fury - is there a serious alternative to the iPod Classic?

Apple's answer is iPhone 6 or 6 Plus with 128GB. Hopefully, Apple will see fit to update iPod touch with 128GB as well, although my person wish is iPod nano with 128GB.

128gb is still 32gb less than the current iPod classic. Let's get a 256gb iPod.

You can get 1 tb into an ipod via zif to msata converter on an ipod video

With the ipod classic storage was cheap, now they want you to buy some kind of 128gb device or 64gb touch.

This is Apple, though. At best we'll see a 32GB Nano, if not a 16GB since that's still the base iPhone storage space, and then an iPod Touch to match the iPhones.

Best alternative to iPod Classic is modded iPod Video 5.5G with flash drive and bigger battery.

I concur. I have a 5th gen 80gb video with 128gb SD card (via Tarkan's CF adapter) and rockbox .
