Hi all,

I apologize for bumping a very old thread(again), but this has become a real issue for me because my Mac Mini mid2011 can only run up to High Sierra and High Sierra will only receive security updates until September 2020...

I want to replace the internal HDD in this Mac Mini mid2011 and do my important work on it.

I'm not concerned with "graphics updates" or "feature updates" but "security updates" are very important to me.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

I have a 2010 Mac mini and I'm running Mojave on it and not having any security problems. I just followed instructions from a site called dosdude 1 and installed a patched version of Mojave for unsupported Macs.

If security updates are very important then buy a newer machine. Right now it sounds like keeping your old machine is far more important than security patches.

Pick your battle - ongoing reliable security patch support or continue using your old and soon to be officially unsupported Mac. Neither option is officially compatible with the other.

That machine is 8 years old! I had one myself, very nice box. But really, if you're doing "important things", it's time to spend a bit of $$ and get at least a Late 2014 Mac mini (used). Or, unplug your 2011 from the internet.

I don't want to risk my security by using non-Apple official updates...

I know my Mac Mini mid2011 is "old", but it gives me more than enough performance as it has 8GB of RAM in it. This is why I'm really upset that Apple will stop offering security updates in September 2020... 😢😢

Beautiful,
You seem to like using "big" and "important" words like "official", "security", "risk" which in the end don't have any meaning at all. When politicians do this, they at the very least try to accomplish a certain manoeuvre. In your case, you just make yourself go in circles.
You have two options:
- Widen your horizons, do a better research into the "patchers". I get a vibe from your post that on some level you do realise that your "old hardware" is still very capable(so you are half way there already).
- Buy a newer Mac that still supports the current macOS.
