Well I did say "most". Looks like customized Macs don't get it. Personally I've never had anything take more than 2 days once shipped even on custom orders but perhaps I was lucky. Plus with my more recent orders going directly to the Apple Store they have a business shipping/receiving advantage.

Yea, I'm not sure why mine didn't get the two-day shipping. And I was totally hoping it would arrive on the friday before, so I could play with it that weekend. Either way, no big deal. It's not hurting anyoine to wait a few extra days to get a computer you'll use for several years

I feel ya there. I never get new toys on Fridays or Saturdays. End up spending a large portion of the work day updating shipment tracking info. lol

Now I do have an Apple Store that's not too far away (about hour drive) will they have multiple iMacs in stock or will they only have certain models of iMac ? Would it be faster to ship directly to them instead ? My wife and I both work days so I definitely don't want a new computer to just be hanging out on the porch for hours ...

DVI is like 2 gen away from what I/O iMac uses. It really depends if you want a dual monitor setup badly, it is useful for productivity, but sitting next to a 5K DCI-P3 display your old 1080 will just pale too much. You may have to do a 2-step conversion with a USB-C to HDMI/DP dongle from the iMac first, then a HDMI/DP to DVI dongle.

Another consideration is if you intend to keep the Mini, it can be a great headless server, for home theatre, offloaded to kids for homework what have you, but it would need its own monitor if you use it on another location than the iMac.

The monitor also has VGA if that makes things any easier . I do worry that the mini might just stop working , I don't know how can you tell if a Mac is about to die ?

Get the iMac shipped to the store if you can’t be home to sign for delivery.

DVI should be easier, it is a direct pin swap into HDMI without audio. VGA on the other hand is analog, must be converted with a D/A and subject to intense degrade.

As for the Mini, if and when you got an iMac then I would only offload unimportant tasks to the Mini, so it if does break then there is no big loss. Since the Mini managed to survive being the primary computer of yours anyway, it is probably still in good shape. The mechanical HDD may be the first part to break, and then the logic board if the unit is constantly hot. Personally I still got a G4 (!) 1st gen Mini working, the HDD broke a few times but that's natural, the rest of it is fine.

I use a 1080p display as a "dump screen" next to my 2014 5k imac. It means I can watch non-4k content while working on other stuff. And sometimes I like to seriously multitask. It pales next to my good monitor though.

This second screen supports HDCP though. I don't know if running a non HDCP monitor side by side will trigger this sort of message when you try to use streaming services.

you'll need a usb-c to dvi dongle/cable, but those aren't rare.

Update !!

Ok everyone thanks for all the input it really helped .

My wife is tired of the computer purchasing discussion and is tired of my complaining about my Mac mini so she let me splurge .

We got this :

Refurbished 21.5-inch iMac 3.0GHz quad-core Intel Core i5 with Retina 4K display. Year 2017

$1,099.00

Not maxed out specs , not 27 in , used , but pretty damn good .

Whatever processor you decide, the key thing is get an SSD not a spinning drive. The speed of an SSD is magnitudes greater than the Fusion drive. Plus it is far less likely to fail.

Here my 2 cents on SSD vs. fusion drive. I've had a late 2012 (base model), 21.5, 1TB fusion drive for 5 years and not one issue. It loads up very good on start-up. I usually keep my Mac turn on for a couple of weeks at a time before I re-boot. I do plenty of HD video editing in FCPX but now its time to upgrade which I'm doing this week. One other point, SSD's are very expensive at this time. My take is when and if my 1TB fusion drive ***** to bed on the 27", then and only then would I replace it with an SSD which should be a lot cheaper in the next couple of years. Anyways, thats my 2 cents lol.
