My iPad i would also say is smoother than my MacBook ever was. In fact it got to the point where it felt slow at times but my iPad never feels like that nor do I need to consistently have it on a charger.

With an iPad you can use it as a laptop replacement or a tablet. With a MacBook there’s only one way you can use it which doesn’t suit everybody at all times.

If you don't mind which iPad are you using? I am asking because the iPad I have could be smooth or could be so not smooth that it makes me want to smack it somewhere. My laptop is far more stable and smoother in that regards. Not sure why it happens with the iPad. I don't know how I manage this. For example now I am reading a book. I like to read books in the Books app as I can highlight and add notes and in general it just makes the experience closer to the actual book experience. However now it is so slow. Like I try to highlight something and I wait for 2 seconds to do it. I want to add a note to it. I wait another 2 seconds. It is really annoying. I tried to kill the app and start it again but no change. Cannot say if it iPadOS, the iPad or the Books app or all three in some sort of combination.

The thing I like about my laptop is that if an app goes wrong, I can kill it and restart it and it is all fine. With iPadOS this rarely works. I have to soft reset the iPad which I can do but this process it not any faster compared to my laptop.

Ultimately this is the reason why for now I want to have both a laptop and an iPad.

I’m using the 2020 iPad Pro 12.9

The mac book i was using was the MacBook Air 2019. So not an old model but certainly not the best powerful MacBook you can get so that likely played a factor. However for the price it is the most comparable to the iPad i have today.

Thanks :). Most probably I am unfair to the iPad because I do compare it with more powerful laptop. What I mean is - the iPad is 6th gen 2018 model (not a lot of RAM, not the best CPU out there or GPU). My laptop is Asus with i7 CPU, Nvidia graphics card (1050) and 8 GB RAM. Maybe in my case it is kind of expected and not surprising that my laptop performs better.

It might also be bug in the Books app itself. I am reading a big book (around 1200 pages). Maybe the app itself cannot handle it.

You tried a reset? Have you updated to the latest update? Maybe a bug when it was updated

This question comes up at least a couple of times every month and I have no clue why some people are in a mindset that the MacBook and iPad lineup are mutually exclusive. I use an iPad, a MacBook Air and a MacBook Pro regularly and I have perfectly valid reasons for keeping all of them at the same time.

iPad -
  • iOS Apps
  • Light weight for casual lounging
  • More portable compared to a clamshell MacBook
  • iOS experience in general
  • I love to rest it up on my legs while my legs are up on the coffee table with a cup of coffee next to me and a solid movie 🍿 on my home theatre.

MacBook Pro -

  • macOS apps
  • macOS experience
  • A full multi windowed paradigm
  • Flexible and powerful day to day workhorse

Macbook Air -
  • All of the above but in a less powerful machine.
  • My main business trips companion that I can afford to let go in case of being lost or stolen.
  • My secondary personal trips companion that I can afford to let go in case of being lost or stolen.
  • My main device to remote into my more powerful MacBook Pro while away for more powerful tasks.
It just makes so much sense for keeping all the devices at the same time. So whatever is the best for your personal usage, you should just use it. iPad and MacBook are not mutually exclusive. It might be for some people for sure but painting everyone with the same brush is ludicrous.

If it continues like that I will restart it. Problem is every time I restart it I have to reconnect the pencil as well. It's small thing but annoys me to no end. I hate that whenever an app misbehaves I have to restart the iPad and reconnect the pencil. I want a better way for that (in other words killing the app to recover its normal non buggy behavior).

Indeed it is not completely uptodate. It is on iPadOS 13.3.1 version and not 13.4. Problem is I have limited data traffic and now that I am working from home I have trouble with this. I try to preserve traffic as much as possible. This is why I have not updated my iPad and my iPhone to the latest minor versions of iOS.

I restarted and it does not help. Like I said the iPad can provide smooth experience but sometimes it is anything but smooth.

EDIT: I managed somehow to reach the next chapter in the book and now it seems to behave far better. It could be indeed some combination of the specific book and the app itself.

Seriously ?!?!?!? Now I can understand what kind of people Apple is targeting with this overpriced iPad-keyboard-trackpad combo.

Yes seriously, you can not do spilt screen on the Mac like you can on an iPad. Because quite frankly those apps don’t exist on the Mac that’s why

Each to their own the top of the range MacBook Pro’s are very overpriced certainly when the tasks I can do on a Mac I can do on an iPad

I bought the 512GB iPad Pro 12.9 inch and the Smart Keyboard with Apple Pencil and I don’t see how it provides better experience than laptop or it provide better productivity than laptop. Multitasking is still pain in the ass to deal with, managing files are still clunky, especially with external drives.
That's you. That's not other people.

Is it really so hard to think that other people are not you, and have totally different use cases?

I’ve always been intrigued by the iPad Pro, now if you add a magic keyboard and pencil that is very interesting. I just bought a 16” MacBook Pro and I love that. The lack of multiple users on an iPad is a bummer and I think I may have all of my use cases covered with an iPhone 11 Pro Max and the MacBook Pro... not exactly sure how often I’d use the iPad vs the MacBook.. still doesn’t stop me watching iPad Pro videos on youtube. Lol. But then again I’m a sheep so I should just give them the money..

Hey, nice devices. If you’re not sure about iPad it’s best to approach it with an open mind and try it out for yourself. There is the usual Apple return policy in place, maybe even longer during the pandemic.
Try the devices and return it when you’re not satisfied.

I am desktop and laptop person. Personally carrying Acer Swift 3 as my go to laptop and Acer Nitro 5 as my gaming laptop. Personally build couple desktop PCs used as productivity and media center/gaming PC. Also have a MacBook Air, if I need MacOS.

I primary use my iPad Pro as media consumption devices with occasional use of Apple Pencil. I can’t think of any scenarios that iPad Pro + Magic Keyboard + Apple Pencil makes much sense from either pricing or usage.

First of all. iPad Pro itself is very expensive. 256GB 12.9 inch iPad Pro is already 1099USD and that is already more expensive than entry level MacBook Air. And MacBook Air does lot more than iPad could ever do. When you factoring the cost of the Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil, you are adding other 429 dollar into the bill. All the sudden, you are approaching MacBook Pro pricing. With all the professional applications, easier to use operating system and more powerful hardware. It is very hard to justify cost of iPad Pro combo.

Secondly: It seems that iPad Pro plus the magic Keyboard combo is about 1.1kg according to amazon. The MacBook Pro itself is not much heavier than the iPad Pro. For portability perspective, the iPad Pro plus Magic Keyboard combo is not much portable than MacBook Pro and MacBook Air is almost as portable as iPad Pro itself.

I don’t know. It doesn’t make to much sense to spend that kind of money on iPad Pro combo when they can get much better MacBook Pro.

For me, the iPad Pro combo is almost as much as my Acer Nitro 5 and Acer Swift 3 combined (both refurbished and both are great computers).

just because it doesn’t work for you, there are plenty of people that an iPad Pro works for as their only computer. That’s the beauty in Apple offering a full range of Macs and a full range of iPads so people can find their fit.

the macbook air is the one that's overpriced especially if you compare it with a 3rd gen ipad's much better screen, speakers, performance, portability and features.

I think a lot of the ‘fun’ for me is obsessively researching a device first and trying to think if its the right fit for us. Plus, after buying the MacBook and 2 sets of Airpod Pros I should take a spending break on Apple gear so my wife doesn’t kill me.

The most iPad can do is three way split screen. I can do multiple windows on either Windows or Mac. You get even more productivity when hook up with high resolution screen. iPad Pro can’t match multitasking capability on a Mac or Windows.

Wow, iPads don’t operate a windows based OS so I can’t glue a hundred different windows onto my screen. Captain Obvious strikes again.

Sell your iPad then. Easy fix.

The point from the post you quoted however was a different one. I’ll let you figure that one out in your own time.

You can do all of that with only one device, MacBook Pro. iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard is only slightly lighter than MacBook Pro. When you including Magic Keyboard and the Apple Pencil, it is just clunky as MacBook Pro And it is nowhere near the feel of MacBook Pro.

When you carrying MacBook Pro, you get one devices. When you carrying iPad Pro, you are carrying multiple pieces that attached together. And I bet you have iPhone. You get iOS experience with iPhone. iPad Pro with Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil is priced so high, it is no longer making sense to shell out laptop money for way less functionality. If I wish to experience iPad experience, I would only forgo with entry level iPad with a cheap keyboard case. Laptop money for an iPad experience is way to much.

I have two laptops, Acer Swift 3 and Acer Nitro 5. I brought the Swift 3 2 years ago and pass to my wife. I got the Acer Nitro 5 gaming laptop for my laptop need.

My 2018 iPad Pro is probably my last iPad.

Yet, you don’t have to glue hundred different windows onto your screen. You have the capability to do so if you need. On the other hand, you just get a watered down OS that can’t handle more than 3 split screen. Ouch

So what was the point of you starting a thread telling everyone that you have chosen a laptop over an iPad? What did you hope to gain from doing so?

Nothing. I am not against iPad, but iPad Pro combo doesn’t make any sense price wise. I am more incline to purchase 10.1 inch iPad with cheap keyboard case. Same experience, much lower price point.

iPad is always meant for the device in between laptop and phone. This is how Steven Jobs presented and this is how iPad function. Therefore, when Apple is charging laptop money for a tablet combo, it is no longer sense.

Oh Captain Obvious is back for another go. So now I don’t have to glue a hundred windows to my computer- incredible. Just like on an iPad.

So go to your legacy OS and don’t let the door hit you on way out.

Makes sense for me. I now leave my laptop at home when I travel. It just doesn't make sense for you.
