That second photo appears to show the limitations of artificial-bokeh.

Look closely at the yellow flower closest to the camera. Just above the yellow petals, and just right of center there is a long pointed leaf sticking out towards the camera. Both the base and the tip of the leaf are in sharp focus but the middle part is "smudged". It's as if the camera lens has two focal planes. Very odd.

This is probably why Apple calls it "portrait" mode? The software doing the 'smudging' only knows how to isolate human faces and bodies accurately. My guess is that it's built on top of existing face recognition software. Nun-human foreground objects can't be interpreted correctly and, therefore, may be bokeh'd incorrectly.

I wouldn't really call it great bokeh that the portrait mode creates. Def some nice shallow depth of field, esp when viewing on a mobile device.

Most fast point/shoot cameras can create "creamier" more pleasing bokeh.

But in any event, still pretty cool.

Definitely more than good enough quality for social media. Apparently good enough for print per the latest commercial.

Nice pic.

I wouldn't be surprised if it stayed in beta for a while. Putting it beta kind of gives them a cushion for some of the unavoidable "errors" in the faux bokeh effect.

Phone screwed up the straw, but other than that I think this came out pretty decent, using the iOS 11 beta
