Shared drive I do not recognize

For the first time ever, I opened up my documents folder and on the left sidebar, I noticed under the "Shared" section a PC named "brncca2b9". I do not own that device, why is it listed on my Mac Pro?

They do not have access to my computer do they?

Finder - Preferences - Sidebar - Shared - Bonjour Computers (untick) and it should go away, hopefully.

EDIT : actually that will just hide it from view. Is your own wifi network secured properly by the way? I am wondering if this is someone mooching off your wifi.

I just changed my Time Capsule/Wireless Network password... The device was still listed on the sidebar, even after a restart... Making me wonder here...

If they did have access to the WiFi, they would still need the password for the computer to access the files, correct?

Any way I can check to see if someone has gained access to my network/drives?
 
Is there any way that this could be my Brother Printer?

LOL! Yeah, I just did that... No change. I searched my Time Capsule logs, it doesn't ever show that device handshaking with my network... So I'm guessing they never got on, but why would it still show up?

Something to do with iPhoto or iTunes sharing? Very weird. I'll like to get this figured out!
 
It is listed as a "PC" with a logo of an old PC... When I try to connect to it, it says that the server is no longer available.

I have the following devices on the network...

MacBook Air
Mac Pro
AppleTV
iPhone (2)
iPad (1)
PS3
Brother Printer

I believe all devices are accounted for... None with that name... Under AirPort Utility it shows under the DHCP Clients as "BRNCCA2B9". Does not show up under wireless. I do not have Parallels open on the Mac Pro, so that can't be it. Any other ideas?

I do have Parallels, but it is NOT running. Even when it has been running I've never seen this. I've changed all my passwords and it's still there. In another forum others believe it might have something to do with Bonjour or possibly a bug? Very weird.
 
Occasionally OSX "remembers" the PC on our network even when after it has been switched off. Try accessing the mystery PC when parallels is on?

It has been many many months since I've ran Parallels, so I'm guessing that that is not it. I've restarted both of my Macs on the network. Reset the modem and power cycled the Time Capsule. The PC device comes and goes.
 
That's most likely your printer. My HP does the same thing. No idea what it's supposed to be serving.

(You can probably verify this by going into Safari and in bookmarks looking at your "Bonjour" web bookmarks. The printer should show up here as well in since it has a configuration web page. At least my HP does this.)

I'm thinking printer as well.

OP: what model of Brother printer is it (is it attached via WiFi or Ethernet)?

MFC-9840CDW

I've had this printer forever and I've never noticed it showing up as a Shared drive. It is attached via Ethernet.

W in the model number = Wireless, so it may be active, even though it's attached via Ethernet.

Worth checking out at any rate, but I suspect this is the issue.
 
On an early beta of Lion, I had a similar issue. I took my MBP to school, where there are like 80 macs connected to the network, which are visible by clicking on the "Shared" tab in finder. When I got home, I opened up my MBP and connected to my home wifi network. My brother then noticed a computer on the network called "Science Lab." We changed our wifi password, and it was still there. So I finally realized that there is a computer by that name at my school. I then realized that it was a glitch in 10.7b2, causing my MBP to host a server on the network which really wasn't a server.

I'm guessing it is a glitch, because when I pull the plug on the printer, it is still there... It comes and goes throughout the day as well... Very weird. I'll just wait to see what happens with the next update.
 
Are you sure it isn't the offline Time Machine backup? The new feature creates a phantom network drive that is supposed to be hidden.
